Hello, my name is Nick Scurlock and I’ve been a resident of Saint Petersburg for almost 5 years. Last Monday (August 19th, 2019,) I was traveling eastbound towards downtown on my bicycle using Central Ave. Due to so many cars passing me illegally, I had to resort to riding on the shoulder of the road so the cars could safely pass. While trying to get back into a safer area of the lane, I hit the curb from the photo I’ve attached. Not only did I fly over my handlebars, but I Injured my face, arm, shoulder, and consequently broke my collar bone. I’m now out of work for at least 6 weeks. My question is, why is there a median two feet out from the road, and also, what is the city doing to better enforce the laws that protect cyclists? If more drivers knew they are legally not supposed to pass cyclists on central avenue, I would not have had to ride the shoulder of the road and I never would have hit that median. I’d also like to know why there is no yellow paint or reflectors around it. Hopefully no one else gets injured from it in a similar fashion. I hope to hear back from someone soon.
