As stated: our collection day is Wednesday, May 18; our trash and recycling was picked up as usual, but the compost was not.

The sidewalk along Ellery St. bordering the library park (called Joan Lorentz Park on Google maps) has not been cleared after this weekend's snow storm. This is clearly the responsibility of the City of Cambridge, and it reflects some kind of systemic failure (I'm sorry to use these buzzwords, but it's really true here) as this particular stretch of sidewalk regularly does not get shoveled for several days after snowstorms. This has been true for the last several years. Cambridge does such a spectacular job clearing snow from the roads and sidewalks in front of public buildings elsewhere! Please figure out who is supposed to do this stretch and set it up so that it's not forgotten in the next snowstorm!

And once you do, may I suggest sending out city employees to clear snow from sidewalks, at least on the larger and recently renovated streets where it can be done by machine? This makes so much more sense than encouraging citizens to snitch on their neighbors who did a bad job shoveling in the front of their house. I think this would be a really popular initiative. Thank you for considering!

The War Memorial pool lights are on overnight Friday April 16 to Saturday April 17. I'm sure this is an oversight -- expensive, a huge waste of energy, and pointless light pollution! Is there an emergency number we who live nearby should call when this happens?

I would like to ask the City of Cambridge to consider restarting compost pickup. When the pandemic started in March, the city switched to putting compost in the trash because it meant less people on the streets -- that the time I no one knew what was going on and this kind of measure made sense. But now we know a lot more about how the virus spreads and doesn't; it would be fantastic if we were able to pick up where we left off with the composting program.

The War Memorial is no longer being used as a temporary shelter, so the tennis courts are no longer being used for this! Please unlock the gates so that we who live nearby can use the space for exercise -- it's one of the only places in the city where one can bounce a ball against a wall without fearing breaking a window. (Yes, it would be great if the tennis nets can come back, but this is NOT necessary for residents to be able to take advantage of this unique space for recreation and exercise. Do not wait! Just unlock the gates!)

The last couple of nights, the lights have been on at the War Memorial Pool overnight. (I can't see them well during the day, so I am less certain about the daytime.) I know this is a difficult time, so I don't want to complain about nonsense, but both the energy waste and the extra amount of money that the City of Cambridge is spending on electricity here seem not insignificant. Thank you! -- Anna Medvedovsky

The sidewalk along Ellery St. adjacent to what I think of as the library park (and what I see marked on maps as Joan Lorentz Park) is unpassable for anyone but the most in-shape walker. In particular it is not passable for a regular stroller. This is adjacent to publicly owned land, and I would have expected the City of Cambridge to set a good example for sidewalk snow removal! (In fact, as Cambridge is a walking city, I think it would be most appropriate for the City to clear all, or most, sidewalks from snow rather than expecting homeowners to do this, just as the City clears all, or most, streets for cars.)
