Mystic River Reservation Bike Path Medford, MA, 02155, USA - MedfordThe railing on the ramp portion of the Hand Memorial Bridge (Pipe bridge) has rusted away at the concrete in two places, and swings freely. If someone needed to grab it for support, it would bounce and sway. It's been like this for many months and has not been repaired. Especially if there's ice or snow on the bridge, someone is going to need this railing.

Tree Pruning Request ArchivedMystic River Reservation Bike Path Medford, MA, 02155, USA - MedfordThe pathways between the pedestrian crossing at the pipe bridge and the Condon Shell, as well as the path between the pedestrian crossing and South Street, all have overhanging tree branches that need to be pruned back. Especially when weighed down by water, they hang low enough that a bicyclist can't crouch down low enough to get under them and can't see anyone coming the other direction.
Even when the leaves are dry, people often have to duck under branches in these places. There are other requests on SCF for pruning in this area; it's needed in more than just one spot. Thanks. -

39-41 Winchester St Medford, MA, 02155, USA - MedfordThese steel plates have been here for months. They have now shifted from people driving over them enough that they're starting to expose the hole they're supposed to be covering. It may be hard to tell in the photo, but the asphalt is subsiding at the edge of the hole, and the corner of the lefthand plate has recently become embedded. There's also some exposed hole at the far edge of the lefthand plate (not visible in the photo).
Eventually these are going to collapse or expose a dangerous amount of hole. Even without that, I keep having cars swerve into my path to avoid driving on these plates when I'm biking down the street in the other direction.
I reported these plates three months ago because they'd been there for so long, and they are still here only now they aren't even covering up the hole anymore. -
Sidewalk Issue (asphalt/concrete) Archived60 High Street Medford, MA, 02155, USA - MedfordThe railing at the end of the footbridge has rusted out of the concrete, so it is just hanging and sending around. Additionally, last week's hot and dry weather has caused more of the decking boards to warp and pull loose. These are a serious tripping hazard! They may be flattened out again right now because of the rain, but they'll warp up again when they dry.

Tree Planting Request Archived75-117 Governors Ave Medford, MA, 02155, USA - MedfordDue to storms and other damage/problems, we have lost several mature trees in the last year. This stretch of Governors Ave now has four stumps in the sidewalk and two in the median; and very few remaining trees.
Can we have some new trees planted in the sidewalk as well as the median this year?
I personally don't care whether the old stumps are removed. I just want new trees planted! Thank you! -
Pothole AcknowledgedGranville Ave & Winchester St Medford, MA, 02155, USA - MedfordThese steel plates have been here for a long time now - I assume because the work in progress underneath them isn't finished yet. But in the meantime, they are a problem for cyclists. In the southbound direction it's obvious why; but even in the northbound direction it's a problem - I keep having oncoming cars suddenly swerve directly into my path because they don't see the plates until the last minute but they don't want to slow down and they don't want to drive over them. If they're going to be here this long, shouldn't they at least have asphalt around the edges to make them easier to drive/bike across? Thanks!

Pothole Acknowledged520-520 Boston Ave Medford, MA, 02155, USA - MedfordThis large and growing pothole is located just shortly after the previous one. There are actually several on this stretch; this is the second biggest. It is a hazard to cyclists in an area where there really isn't a lot of room for impatient drivers to pass. While stopped to take this photo, I saw a cyclist squeeze between this hole and the curb while getting passed very close by a large van. That could have gone very badly.

Pothole Acknowledged531-535 Boston Ave Medford, MA, 02155, USA - MedfordBike wheel for scale. This gigantic hole has been getting bigger, and it's right in the path of a cyclist heading down the hill. It becomes all the harder to avoid when impatient drivers want to pass.
This is a heavily-trafficked bicycle route, and it's a narrow road with not much room for error. -
Pothole AcknowledgedEmerson St & Walnut St Medford, MA, 02155, USA - MedfordThis is a sinkhole with no cracked pavement, meaning that the edges are rounded and it becomes next to invisible. That makes it a particular hazard for bicyclists, who may be on this road in order to avoid Main St. It's big enough to make a pretty big bump if you hit it, but it's hard to see. It was difficult to even get a photo; the only reason it shows up this well is that the ground was still slightly damp in that spot.

Pothole Acknowledged297-299 Harvard St Medford, MA, 02155, USA - MedfordExtremely hazardous to cyclists!
There's a huge pothole at a patch on the road surface just before going under the rail bridge, and another slightly smaller one in another patch right after the bridge. Both of these are in the travel lane and could cause a very serious crash if a bicyclist hit them. This is also an area that collects runoff, and if the low areas get filled with water, the potholes become totally invisible.
This is a miserable road for bicyclists because you have to devote so much attention to the people coming at you from behind or attempting to pass when they don't have enough room; a hole like this makes it even worse. -
Pothole ArchivedEmerson St & Walnut St Medford, MA, 02155, USA - MedfordPothole on Walnut St in a location that's potentially hazardous to cyclists. It looks like a sinkhole, not chipped pavement. That makes it easy to miss seeing, and it's in a part of the lane where a cyclist is likely to be if they're trying to avoid the door zone.

Tree Planting Request Archived117 Governors Avenue Medford, MA, 02155, USA - MedfordThank you for taking down the trees that needed to go, but I hope we can get new trees planted soon! Our block now has four big stumps, and no more trees. There's even at least one empty hole in the sidewalk. I hope we can get new trees sooner rather than later! Thank you!

Tree Pruning Request AcknowledgedGovernors Ave Medford, MA, 02155, USA - Medford
This might be a slightly odd request, but would it be possible to leave this stump/tree remains as is, instead of taking it the rest of the way down?
My reasoning is that vertical elements like this do act as a traffic calming measure, and speed is a real problem here. We have just lost four tall trees, and it takes awhile before new trees will grow as tall as this. So for the time being, could you just leave it standing?
Maybe we could even put reflectors or a "caution - pedestrians" sign on it.Thank you for taking care of the trees that had been dropping limbs; we are sad to see them go, but they were a safety hazard.

Sidewalk Issue (asphalt/concrete) Archived60 High Street Medford, MA, 02155, USA - MedfordThe deck boards on the footbridge between Shipyard Way and Rt 16 have been warping and deteriorating extremely quickly. Many are now loose and curved so that if you step on one end, the other end swings up. This is a heavily used footbridge; at the moment it's only a tripping hazard, but it's getting worse and could end up with actual gaps in the bridge surface.
