3590 Sanborn Drive Oakland, California - Joaquin Miller Park

Very invasive goat grass seed is ripening in Joaquin Miller Park: There is a patch of barbed goatgrass (Aegilops triuncialis) in Joaquin Miller Park, near the west end of the Sanborn one-way loop. The area is about 50x25 square feet; it slopes slightly, and has a mix of goatgrass (about 1 foot tall) and much taller annual grasses. We request that in the next 1 or 2 weeks it be mown, ideally catching the debris for disposal rather than leaving it on site.

Here is the weed report Karen Paulsell submitted on this occurrence: http://tinyurl.com/aegtri -- showing the location and photos of the seedhead. It is one of only three locations in Alameda County. The plant is very invasive, and hitchhikes readily on shoelaces and other clothing. The California Dept. of Agriculture is very concerned about controlling this weed before infestations spread. However, they can provide no resources to help local land managers.

Contact Kimra at (510) 501-3672 to get contact info for a FOSC volunteer who can meet with you to show you the exact location.

We really do not want to let this plant spread into the nearby picnic areas or to trail edges. Thank you!
