401-499 West 9th Street Richmond, Virginia - Richmond Precinct 1

When turning (left or right) from W 9th street it is very difficult to see oncoming traffic due to the trees that are on the sidewalk in front of Link Apartments on Semmes ave unless you pull out into the right hand lane. This is an accident waiting to happen.

The attached photo is from google earth and shows the exact view and problem at this intersection. Very difficult to see oncoming traffic.

I wanted to resubmit this issue with a photo of the problem as it is still persisting.

The issue is the parked car(s) outside of Windsor Memory Care as you are heading west on grove ave after crossing over Thompson St. There are parked cars on the street outside of this business that obstruct the flow of traffic and block the bike lanes, this is especially true during times of heavy traffic (lunch, afternoon, etc...). If you're driving a small compact car there is enough room to drive around the vehicles parked there, however if you drive a full size truck you have to cross over into the left lane in order not to hit the parked cars. This causes delays at the Thompson st. traffic signal and also is a hazard because some drivers will merge into the left lane trying to avoid the parked car(s) without looking to the left. The business also has a parking lot on the side of the building that visitors to the business can use so they don't have to park on grove ave. The stretch of road on grove from Thompson to Hamilton should have no parking signs as there is not a dedicated parking lane like there is further west on grove after Hamilton.

There should be “no parking” signs around the entrance to Perry Place apartments. As a resident there, having to turn out of the apartments when people are parked on the side of the street just before and just after the entrance can be very dangerous. You cannot see people turning on to Perry street nor can you see people coming towards commerce rd. if vehicles are parked in those two spots. The “red” car in the picture is a perfect example, if someone were to try to turn left out of that entrance, they are unable to see as someone else may be turning on to Perry St. from Commerce Rd. –which they typically do faster than they probably should.

I travel across the Manchester Bridge on a daily basis and turn left onto Canal St. turning into the middle of the three lanes. Due to the timing of the lights I am usually stopped at the intersection of N. 8th St. and Canal. A lot of the time there also cars that are to my left in the left hand lane. My understanding of how the arrows are painted is that the left hand lane and the middle lane can both go straight towards the on-ramp to 195, however both lanes have to shift to the left if doing so. See diagram #1 attached, the red dashed line represents a vehicle in the middle lane and the green dashed line represents a vehicle in the left hand lane.
The problem is that there is no clear indication that the vehicle in the left hand lane must stay in far left lane as they cross under the 8th street light. What happens is that the person in the left hand lane will go straight and cut off the person in the middle lane also going straight towards the 195 on ramp. See the diagram #2 attached. The green dashed line represents what typically happens as people don’t know that they should be staying in the left hand lane once crossing through the intersection. I have personally been involved in some very close “near miss” accidents at this intersection and I see this problem occurring on a daily basis.
I’m not sure what can be done at here, but something needs to be done before someone gets into a serious accident. Can you put up signs? Can you repaint the lines? Can you add new lines that represent the appropriate flow of traffic?
Also, can you repaint the lines on the two left hand turn lanes from 9th st onto Canal? A similar problem exists here where there are two turn lanes and the person in the left hand turn lane will turn and turn into the middle lane on canal at the same time as the person in the right hand lane will be trying to turn into the same lane on canal.
