Illegal Apartment Open64 Upham Street Malden, Massachusetts, 02148 - Malden Ward 7
Myself, two boys and another male has been living in an illegal apartment. The property manager who lives on first floor, said he was given permission by the city for two tenants, and saying he needed to schedule an inspection for over a year now, has now decided to evict 2 of the 4 of us after confronting the issues. We have to use his mailbox and mailing address, they make us pay 3/4’s of the utilities, as we can’t set up our own. There is only one way in. No full windows to escape if a fire. Lack of smoke detectors and CO detectors. Mold has taken over the bathroom due to venting issues. He put a vent in, but he has it connected to the dryer vent- so it’s been no help. We will be addressing the issues in court, but would like proper authorities to come evaluate the situation here. It is very unsafe. Housing as been an issue, so we will need help with resources.
My phone number is 603-803-8111
My name is Peggy Bernier
Thank you

Excessive Noise Open99 Florence Street Malden, MA, 02148, USA - Malden Ward 4The apartment building at 99 Florence St has a large industrial AC unit in back (abutting Garnet St) running all the time that is *loud*. From approximately 150 ft away, inside my apartment, this noise reads over 60 decibels per my phone. The relevant municipal code (https://malden.municipalcodeonline.com/#book/mread?type=ordinances&name=10.04.020_NOISE_ABATEMENT;_DISTURBING_THE_PEACE_PROHIBITED) says noise over 50 decibels at the property line between 9 p.m. and 7 a.m. is excessive and prohibited. From much further away and inside a building the decibel level is too high for nighttime according to the ordinance. Last summer when I made a complaint your office’s reply was effectively “this is the same level of noise as it’s been before” and I’m complaining again to say… so what? The noise was prohibited then, last summer, and remains so now. Please make the apartment building use an AC unit that is not excessively loud and disturbing to other Malden residents in their homes.

Obstructive eye sore Archived82-118 Pearl St Malden, MA, 02148, USA - Malden Ward 2A health care conglomerate has built a piece of advertising that is a massively obstructive eye sore in one of Malden’s few open spaces. Can it be relocated or at least repositioned so the graffiti-magnet will face the train tracks? Seems like poor planning.

Overgrowth from City Hall Archived215 Pleasant Street Malden, Massachusetts, 02148 - Malden Ward 4
Yeah... I've got a concern about some "overgrowth" coming out of City Hall. I was just reading about the ordinance that bans all nicotine products for anyone born after 1 Jan 2004, *forever*. It's absolutely preposterous.
I know cigarettes are bad for you. I don't smoke, and I don't like having to smell them *in public*, either. But it's outrageously patronizing to tell a grown @#$% adult "you can't even do X in the privacy of your own home because of your generation". That's *literally discrimination*. I'm 36, so it doesn't affect me personally, but if I were a younger person affected by this ordinance, I absolutely would sue you.
Those convenience store retailers I read about who sued Brookline may not have won that lawsuit they filed. I'm not a lawyer, but I'd be willing to bet that (a) retailers saying "you don't have the regulatory authority to do X" and (b) an individual citizen saying "this ordinance unconstitutionally discriminates against because of my generation" are two very different things legally speaking. Once someone has legal standing to file such a suit on or after 1 January 2025, when people born in 2004 will turn 21, I expect it will only be a matter of time.
You know, I would actually be *less* outraged if you had just banned nicotine products for everybody across the board. That would at least be FAIR - and if you still think Prohibition is a good idea, arguably in the interest of public health. But you didn't do that, because you knew enough adults smoke that it would never fly. So what do you do instead? You pick on the smallest possible population of 21-year-old young adults and take away their rights just so that you can smugly virtue signal. Their rights to do something dangerous and unhealthy, granted - but their rights nonetheless!
I swear, this is the type of @#$% overreach that eventually turns people into Republicans. Shame on you. Shame.
