669 Thomas L Berkley Way Oakland, California, 94612 - San Pablo Gateway

    To all:

This has gotten out of hand. OUT..OF..HAND Our street, the 600 block of Thomas L. Berkley Way (x Castro), has become an enormous encampment that has now posed multiple issues to our businesses and us personally as well. As you can see from the other emails below, we aren’t the only tenants on this part of the street that are suffering the losses of business or potential occupiers of a vacant building. Our safety is jeopardized … this has to be fixed.

For us at French Bros., we have been heckled and threatened by the homeless, have found them in our gated parking lot banging on our cars then snuck out when our gate opened, they try to come inside our building asking for food and bathroom use, have heard multiple fights on the street where screaming threats and weapons between each other (one held a long pole threatening to ward off another homeless) and this is all part of the personal level where we fear for our safety.

On a business level, (after being in this location over 20 years) we have had customers not stop at our retail showroom because 1) they are scared to drive and walk through this encampment, 2) can’t park because of 2 large truck/trailers that are abandoned and used for what appears to possibly be prostitution, but have been dismantled where they cannot be driven taking up a lot of valuable curb space (these need to be towed ASAP); and our large semi-truck drivers who deliver our carpet rolls, supplies and pallets to our warehouse are having trouble getting through this crammed part of the street…all of this where we fear loss of business we cannot afford.

Business has clearly taken a turn because of it, our safety is in jeopardy, and before it gets even worse, we are vigorously asking for something to be done to remove this encampment. Honestly, it doesn’t appear Oakland can afford to lose another successful business, but if we continue to fear for our safety and have this kind of loss of business, I’m not sure we’ll have much choice.

Please contact me at your earliest convenience to discuss this. We are anxious to get this cleaned up (which started because the freeway fencing got redone, and they all moved to this street). PLEASE HELP US.

5420 Shafter Ave Oakland CA 94618, United States - Shafter
Access to water line valves is blocked. The photo with the two street patches shows the valves, which are necessary for the fire hydrant and street water lines to work properly. The other photo shows the corner of Shafter near Hudson where street repairs covered up the valve with asphalt. With these valves covered up, a break in the street line would be difficult to stop, because the fire dept. and EBMUD would have to shut off the entire area to fix it. If a car hits the fire hydrant, there would be a stream of water up to 60 feet high (the water is under pressure) and it would be a real problem for firedepartment as well. Access to these valves is required by the California Building Code. Please have these valves uncovered...

Please fix this guard rail. It protects the homes at the bottom of the hill that I’ve already been crashed into. Our neighborhood has been asking for this guard mail to be fixed for six years, thank you. issue
