  • 2076 Misty Sunrise Trail Sarasota, Florida - Sarasota County
Friday night's rain event caused a back up of the stormwater system in our community. I believe the lake that our system outfalls into was not properly draining into the subordinate systems as designed. I believe that the county structure with the facility ID of CT_112016_026403 may be impacted by vegetation or storm debris. Can you please check the outfall and the subordinate ditches/pipes for proper operation?

Ongoing Flooding effects approximately 10 homes and properties including 4 streets. the spring fed lake adjacent to my property backs up due to the amount of water the county is directing into it through 3 drainage canals. There is a culvert that leads out to Phillippe creek to the south but is inefficient to handle the volume. Last year I worked with county to have a broken back flow valve replace at the Phillippe creek end of the out flowing culvert, was told it was replaced in Dec. but not sure. During the heavy rainfall in AUG the lake rose 5'8" and flooded the entire area. During Irma with less than 5" of rainfall the lake rose 6'4" flooding all properties and roadways over 2 blocks. County employees were out to take pictures on both occasions. This must be addressed with urgency, more development is underway to the west, east and north. The situation is already critical and bound to get worse with the failure to address how to get this issue resolved currently let alone how to plan for the additional runoff that this unchecked development will certainly cause. Attached is photo showing S. Leewynn Dr under 3'+ of water, auto in floodwaters and my and just one of my neighbors property under water, normal edge of lake is another 30'+ to the right out of photo shot.

There is a drainage ditch behind my house with a county easement. The ditch has not been maintained and no longer drains. This is causing standing water and a mosquito problem.

Previous issue ID # SR427379 has not been resolved. Cleaning has happened in some downstream structures but no study or grade work has been completed to provide daylight to the drain pipe from Sylvan Lea drive West to the lake in Shadow Oaks. The storm pipe is still under water even with no rain for months. We had one rain event recently and the roadway still held water because the lake's outfall is too high and the pond's control elevation needs to be adjusted to allow more freeboard during storage events. Please let all the residents of Sylvan Lea what study has been done to verify that the lake's outfall is at the proposed control elevation. Rainy season is coming and the county has had months to manage this problem but the residents of the community believe it has been ignored due to lack of rain events. Provide an update to the residents of the repairs completed and assurance that our homes will not flood when it rains again. Life safety is impacted when the road is flooded and EMS can not reach the residents.
