This is what the street looks like at 9:30AM. Massive excess of road capacity which leads to speeding, combined with poor conditions for pedestrians and cyclists.
A buffered bike lane, which is a standard in NYC and Philadelphia now, would make the street safer for all road users by narrowing it and reducing speed.
This is a very popular bike route and with an actual lane, bike use would triple overnight (based on experiences of other cities that do this). This would free up more parking for local businesses to thrive and hire more staff.
986 Chapel St New Haven, CT 06511, USA - Town_Green
A former comedy club, this Yale-owned storefront at 986 Chapel Street has been empty since before Bruce Alexander came to New Haven in 1998. (Out of fairness to Bruce, Yale didn't take ownership of this piece of the Schiavone portfolio until 1999.)
C'mon Bruce, you're a real estate whiz. I know you and Yale can do better, -- especially given the fact that this is such a great location. Renovate the hideous storefront into something respectable, and then I bet you'll find a good tenant in a hurry.
PS -- It is not okay that next door at 976 Chapel is also a permanently dead storefront. I understand that it is such a big space that it's tough to rent. However, lower the rent if you have to! This is prime real estate, and the neighborhood deserves another lively retail tenant.

Chapel And High Street - Town_GreenI have seen cops on a daily bases park illegally underneath the stop light, get out of their car, walk into starbucks, get a coffee and walk out to their car and leave. I am pretty sure that they are only allowed to break the law for reasonable reasons or if they are doing something positive like stopping a crime. I don’t think getting a coffee or going to News Haven applies to this situation. I would like it stopped, and for our cops to start obeying the same laws they enforce on us.

Tonight, between 6 and 6:30 pm there was another mugging on Court
Street between Olive and Artizan Streets near the Friendship House
apartments. 2 men slammed a neighbor to the ground and took his
wallet and cell phone. Coincidentally, a coworker of the victim was
on his way home at the end of the incident and called the police.
Details are still coming in and I will let you know when I have a full
description of the attackers.
Please, do not walk home after dark on Court Street on the north side
of the street. Walk with a friend, do whatever you can to stay safe.

This decision is arbitrary, and not in the best interests of the public at large. We have diverse, eclectic programming scheduled to go until 10pm, as we have done downtown, in the City of New Haven, for the last 9 years.

more needs to be done to prevent this coffeeshop from becoming a hangout for the homeless. (i don't deny that more needs to be done FOR the homeless, but this one business should not shoulder that burden/suffer because business is driven away.)
every time i visit here, i hear disrespectful language yelled across the store, conversations about drugs including potential drug deals right in the store, and generally offensive conversations. it is very frustrating that this happens often in front of children and first-time visitors to new haven.
i see the same several faces every time who commit these acts. after one guy yelled "f you" loudly across the entire store, i turned and made a motion to calm down with my hand, because there was a 3 or 4 year old in line behind me. he responded with " bl*w me".
bars can ban certain customers who do not behave themselves. can starbucks begin to do the same?

Shaw's is closing all CT stores but has not found a buyer for the Whalley Ave. location. The New Haven region could really benefit from the opening of a year-round market inside and around the Shaw's shopping center (there is an enormous, underutilized parking lot there also). I'm not sure about the zoning so I'm hoping someone could check on that.
The market could potentially provide year-round access to fresh produce and crafts, it could serve the city as a public space, and simultaneously help to sustain the local economy in these uncertain times.
55-61 Audubon Street New Haven, CT 06510, USA - Town_GreenAbandon dog tied up behind ACES on Audubon Street. Part pit bull part boxer. Animal Control does not answer the phone and the police said to call animal Control. Mailbox of Animal Control officer filled so I called my Alderman to see if he could help. Went looking for police officer on Whitney, none to be found.
259 State Street New Haven, CT - Downtown
Since its opening in 2002, the New Haven State Street Train Station has served downtown New Haven in only a limited capacity and largely serves as a Shoreline East terminus for CT Commuter Rail. Metro-North trains only serve the station on a limited morning and evening basis, with no midday trains to or from Grand Central between 10am and 3:30pm, no trains arriving or departing after 6pm, and no weekend trains.
The New Haven State Street Station is ideally located in downtown New Haven to serve the neighborhoods of Wooster Square and Downtown, which have seen significant increases in population in recent years. With the completion of the 360 State project, there are now also 500 public parking spaces available in a vibrant urban center directly across from the station, making it all the more accessible to commuters.
With residential capacity higher than ever surrounding the station, and a growing demand for more public transportation options, it is time to bring Metro-North full service to New Haven State Street Station.

In summer 2012, the Amtrak 2040 New York City to Boston high speed rail plan was revised to include a connection to Providence R.I..
However, the route still bypasses Stamford, Bridgeport, and New Haven in favor of a route through Danbury.

Amtrak's high speed rail system from New York City to Boston should not bypass Connecticut's most economically vibrant cities. Additionally, adding a high speed route through Upstate New York and Danbury, instead of through an area that already has a large amount of existing urban infrastructure, would create more development pressure in environmentally sensitive areas.
We should be focusing our nation's infrastructure investments into our most sustainable, economically competitive urban centers, not into "green fields."
By point of comparison, the planned high speed rail route from Washington DC to NYC passes through the urban centers of Baltimore, Philadelphia, Wilmington, and Newark -- not through rural and semi-rural areas.
Bradley At State New Haven, CT - Downtown
Help us make the Bradley/State Intersection safe!
In April 2012 we submitted a New Haven Complete Streets project request to improve the safety of motorists, pedestrians, and bicyclists at the intersection of Bradley and State (attached).
This application requested bump-outs to improve visibility on State Street at Bradley Street -- or a traffic light.
The Engineering Department of the City replied that our problem would be assessed by “ . . . verification of speeds and volumes on the road, traffic accident data and a physical review of the road and its context within the neighborhood.”
This measure alone will not illustrate how difficult and dangerous it is to exit Bradley. We need you to document your experiences with this intersection in the comments below.
