  • 1900 Berkeley Way Berkeley, California - Berkeley

Is it possible to re-calibrate the traffic signal timing along MLK between University and Hearst? In the late afternoon (5-6PM), while travelling northbound on MLK, it is not uncommon to have a green light at University but then have to stop at Berkeley Way and then again at Hearst.

Similarly, in the morning (7:30-8:30 AM), while travelling southbound on MLK, one will have to stop at Hearst and then, as soon as light turns green, the light at Berkeley Way turns red. There is SOME overlap among these lights in terms of being green or red at the same time, however, given the heavy flow of traffic during the commute hours it clearly is not enough.

These intersections have come perilously close to gridlock as drivers attempt to make it through the intersection only to be caught by a red light ahead which traps them in the path of cross-traffic.

Perhaps the solution is to change the light timing based on the time of day in order to coincide with predominant direction of the flow of traffic, or perhaps extend each light's phase, again, based on the time of day.

  • Street Sign Archived
1278 Delaware St Berkeley, CA 94702, USA - Berkeley
Path crossing warning sign and flashing light completely hidden behind tree, eastbound Delaware St before the West Street Pathway crossing. If possible please move the sign/signal as opposed to injuring the tree.
