midway between high st. and college st., students are constantly streaming across the street. my belief is that students will always take the most direct path across regardless of the crosswalk at york. another crosswalk would be ignored here, as drivers already speed through the light at york.
any chance yale could build a simple pedestrian crossing above the street? i bet there are plenty of local architects who would jump at the chance.

A crosswalk is needed from Phelps Gate to the Green. There is a mid block crosswalk on Temple Street, in front of the Omni Hotel (which has far fewer pedestrians than Phelps Gate!), which could serve as a model.
Doing this would require bumping out the curbs and removing some parking spaces, in order to increase the visibility of pedestrians.
It would also help reduce speeding on the street. Cars currently travel through this area at very high speeds, putting pedestrians' lives at risk.
Chapel And Church Street New Haven, CT - Town_Green
While travelling up Chapel from Orange Street, I stopped at a red light at the Church Street intersection.
I was surprised to see a red jeep drive through the red light at about 5 miles in hour, because a police officer was also at the intersection.
The crosswalk light was on, and we proceeded to ride slowly--with no pedestrians in our lane--through the intersection.
This is perfectly legal, per section Sec. 14-286a, of CT statutes. New Haven has a local ordinance which bans sidewalk riding, but not crosswalk use, and per Sec. 14-286e, crosswalks are NOT sidewalks, and laws made in regard to one do not apply to the other.
The law is very clear on this matter, and I encourage our city police to read on it.
The cop was rude and disrespectful, told me he was sure I was right, but that losing a day's work to sit in court probably wasn't in my best interest, and bragged that he could issue tickets for 120/each to all 3 of us.
The same officer then ran a red light, parked illegally in front of the Starbucks at High Street, and went inside for a coffee.
He was driving car number 10 and it was Friday, July 29th, at 9 am.
College And Chapel Streets New Haven, Connecticut - DowntownThere is a group of bikers that look like they came from the valley drag racing through the city. The bikes have illegal pipes and ear splitting noise. They are running pedestrian crossings and passing cars in full view of the green during jazz fest. The meter maids are busy ticketing jazz goers and NH police ignore the drag bikes, because the cops like the toys. They are ruining jazz fest, drowning out the music with their engines and no one is doing anything.

There was a tree removed from the bed on the sidewalk on Chapel street here right in front of where Scoozi used to be. When the tree was removed the stump was not completely cut down, making it hazardous for clumsy pedestrians like myself. Definitely ate it on Saturday evening. Granted I was not paying as close of attention as I could have been, but I have a feeling I'm not alone in that.
Me and my banged up and bruised knees would greatly appreciate this being taken care of. Thank you!
Temple St. At Wall St. New Haven, CT 06511, USA - DowntownThere is a cross walk to cross Temple Street, at the corner of Wall, and it is marked on the road with white lines! Business people and students (even a group of daycare children with their teachers) cross this very busy intersection all the time. Cars ignore the crosswalk and the pedestrians trying to cross. Cars speed down Temple (one way)to Elm St., and even when a walker is in the midst of crossing they ignore them! Can one of those "pedestrian walkway" signs on a stand be placed in the middle of the walkway please? Thanks for your assistance!
Church And Elm New Haven, CT - Town_Green9:50 AM Friday. Car heading southeast on Elm blows right through red light. Almost knocks me over in crosswalk. Police SUV (665-NH) does nothing when I motion that the car is coming. Traffic stopped. Office had a clear shot at the offender...great job...only tells us that tickets are written during blitzes.
1178 Chapel St New Haven, CT 06511, USA - Dwight
The amount of speeding and red light running at this intersection is obscene.
Cars are speeding past at rush hour more than 20 MPH above the limit, amidst crowds of pedestrians and other vehicles. The red light signal is not obeyed.
It is only a matter of time before a driver loses control and kills or injures several people, as has happened recently at similar intersections (like Crown & College). The very poor pedestrian visibility at the corners, inadequate lighting, and use of line crosswalks rather than the more effective zebra-style crosswalks, only makes matters worse.
Can some police enforcement be added here as a temporary fix, up until the time that the intersection can be rebuilt to a higher standard? Is it even possible to stop red light runners here?
Ultimately, the intersection should be redesigned, like many in other US cities have been, so that travel at more than 15 miles per hour becomes uncommon. I've posted details on similar issues in New Haven about how raised and tabled intersections have been widely used in cities like Boulder, Cambridge Massachusetts, etc.. They have been proven to be extremely effective - not to mention much more cost-efficient than regular police enforcement.
Given that this is in the heart of campus, if Yale University is serious about making sure that students, staff and faculty are not continuing to get injured and killed every year, it should consider pushing the city for a redesign as soon as possible.
Church And Chapel New Haven, CT - Town_GreenRats have taken over the trash can and recycling can on the corner of Church and Chapel, right outside the Starbucks. They are out as early as 8pm at night, running between the two sewers and the trash cans.
265 College Street New Haven, Connecticut - Town_GreenFor 48 hours there has been an invasion or dirt and mortorbikes, operating at ear splitting levels, drag racing on Chapel and College Streets. They seem to drag race west on Chapel, into West Rock, head to East Rock and repeat. The bikes are illegally altered to make the mufflers illegally loud. They also rev their engines, eave in and out of traffic, and block pedestrian crossings. This is in full view of the police, who do nothing about them! It is treacherous and a noise pollution issue!
885 Chapel St New Haven, CT 06510 - Town_GreenThis has been called into the property owner, DAVID NYBERG, several times by about 80 different people over the past year, but no progress has been made. it does not make for a welcoming downtown streetscape
York Street New Haven, CT - Downtown
I had some extra money left on my meter. I assumed i could re-insert my credit card to get it back on my card. I was surprised to see that the City confiscates the leftover money.
I believe this is wrong. I equate this to a "gift card" being expired and the money then just disappearing.
No matter how we view the privilege of parking in New Haven, the money should not be disappearing into the ether.
We should be able to get it back on our credit card.
