1561 5th St ... This house recently vacated by elderly owner has become an attractant for dumping trash and worse. A few weeks ago, there were twelve police cars surrounding this same house when it was broken into. The property is directly across the street from a small market and there is daily smoking & littering by folks loitering on the front steps and up on the porch.
This intersection is terrible. Even though the street is marked, people do not stop for pedestrians, they speed right through, and obviously over 25MPH. It's especially bad at night with poor lighting. The police monitor it during the farmers market, but it needs better daily patrol, or signage. I have been almost hit so many times I have lost count, and I am a healthy adult. If an elderly person or child is there it could be very bad. I have lived here for 2.5 years and I have had enough close calls that I am now afraid to cross the intersection if there are any visible cars, and I am not typically afraid of such things!
I have witnessed enough drivers making right turns off of Webster onto Ralph Appezzeto, and those turning right off of Ralph Appezzeto on to Webster, who are not observing pedestrians in the crosswalks that I am taking the time to write. Today was the most dangerous I have seen. A co-worker was almost hit by two autos --the lead car making a right turn off of Webster onto Ralph Appezzeto, and the car behind that followed -- were both traveling fast, and neither observed the pedestrian walk sign or my co-worker step off the curb. I saw it all from the same cross-walk coming from the opposite side of the R A Parkway. I have too often had to catch the eye of drivers making turns on both corners. I know all police departments are challenged with never enough staff available to help every traffic situation, but this intersection could use whatever help you can provide. Perhaps, just their presence at that corner can help. Drivers are simply not looking for pedestrians making the initial cross in the designated walk on those corners.
My thanks for your time,
Buena Vista Ave By Del Monte Building alameda, California - Alameda
Behind the Del Monte Building on Buena Vista AVe and next to Wind River is an inlet of water. There were 4 boats parked there for about a month. I reported this to you . Three of the boats have left but one sailboat remains and is docked up to the docks that are closed because they are falling down. In addition, the boat people use their small dingy boat to come on shore and leave heaps of garbage next to the street way that goes behind the Del Monte Building and garbage in our water
Someone stopped by and placed masking tape over the port, and painted it green. I am guessing that this solution will last about six months, until the summer sun completely erodes it. Why are we using extremely low budget maintenance protocols to fix thousand dollar lamp post that are rusting from the inside out and have wires that are exposed to children that might reach into the holes?
The empty lot and the area around it need a complete cleaning. There is trash, liquor bottles, surgical gloves and countless piles of dog poop. Some of it is on private property and some on public property. There is also graffiti on the property. The sidewalks are filthy. Is this the best that the City of Alameda can do? This hurts the neighborhood and local business.
Conditions at the intersection of Webster and Atlantic are getting worse. Speeding, red light running and failure to yield to pedestrians have become the norm. This week, a co-worker of mine who does not normally cross Atlantic and Webster, did so. She said that it was incredibly scarier being cut off in the crosswalk. Another co-worker filed a SeeClickFix about her experience. Police enforcement must be increased. When people are afraid to cross the street to go to Starbucks, that says a lot about the conditions here. Vehicles should not be traveling at 50 mph on Atlantic west of Webster. Something has to be done. If the police do not have adequate resources, then install speed bumps and red light cameras. The current worsening conditions are not acceptable and the public should expect better.
