I'm not sure who exactly could be held responsible for this, but between the boarded up property on the South side of the first block of Canner, the parking lot that gets no use at the corner of Nicoll and Canner, and the Lehman Bros. property that isn't doing anything, and the overgrown weeds and trees and the nips and the trash and the drug bags I'm really disgusted with the Nicoll/Canner intersection and the first block of Canner Street. Is there nothing to be done about this? Am I the only person annoyed about all this?

I understand that this is a once in a century storm and the NHDPW is "working around the clock to clean the city streets but why have they plowed the tiny block of Cottage between Linvingston and Orange but neglected the block between Whitney and Livingston. The methodology and strategy of the plowing in East Rock boggles me. Why plow one tiny block of a street yet not plow it completely. What are you going to do tomorrow after the rain freezes this all into a solid mass?

A cop could complete their monthly ticket quota in 1 hour spent at this intersection alone. Despite the painted crosswalk, 99% of cars do not stop, making I‎t EXTREMELY dangerous for pedestrians and bicyclists.
  • Orange And Linden Street New Haven, CT - East Rock

This city of New Haven employee, on a Sunday afternoon at 4, drove the wrong way down Linden Street, a one-way street. He drove to Foster, and from there went to Willow, then Orange, before executing a u-turn to park directly in front of Romeo & Cesare's in the "No parking" area pictured in the photo.

Between the parks department guys and the Board of Ed truck (not to mention police) I see this type of driving from city employees on a daily basis in my neighborhood.

Is there any way to get these guys to drive safely and legally?

  • 131 Canner St New Haven, CT - East Rock

last Friday, both my cars were towed from in front of my house. On Friday morning I heard heavy machinery nearby, which prompted me to head outside to check for street sweeping signs. The one notice I saw was at the end of my block, over 200 feet away. Since there were roughly the same number of cars parked on both sides of the street, I figured it must have been an old sign, perhaps for bulk pickup, that the city forgot to take down. A couple hours later, my cars were gone, and I owe nearly $300 to the town and the tow companies.

My situation highlights a perverse incentive for the city: make street sweeping signs as ambiguous as possible in order to ticket and tow as many vehicles as possible. If this was simply a situation of me failing to see a clearly posted sign, then it would be my fault. But when the nearest sign was at the end of the block, then I must conclude that the city is deliberately doing a sloppy job with the sign posting in order to make money even off of people who would otherwise move their cars.

This intersection needs a traffic light. Both Orange St. and Canner St. are major thoroughfares for this area. There's considerable pedestrian traffic too, including people disembarking from the Yale Shuttle Orange Line stop. I have seen so many near misses - this is a fatality waiting to happen.
3 months ago I saw a big car collision here (one car pulled in front of one barreling down Orange St) as I was riding along Orange on my bike. Today I watched as a couple + dog tried to cross the intersection while cars converged and cut in from every direction. To add to the danger, visibility was reduced on both sides thanks to a minivan parked on a no-parking spot on the SW corner of the intersection and a UPS truck on the other side. Even w/o them it would have been difficult to cross given the high speed and sheer volume of cars coming on Orange St.

339 Willow Street New Haven, CT 06511, USA - East Rock
Willow street is the main evacuation route for emergencies. From Whitney avenue through foster street to the Shell gas station there are large potholes. Traffics patters are changing as the pot holes become larger and unstable to pedestrians, through traffic and emergency response vehicles. Their have been several near miss accidents as traffic travels in the oncoming traffic lanes to dodge the potholes. The street should be repaved and or patched asap. the main evacuation route should be in pristine condition vs suboptimal conditions. I enclosed a lot hole 50feet from Whitney and willow street. These pothokes again are unacceptable and cause environmental issues to everyday community members as well as folks whom use this route.

Does anyone know what the plan is to start plowing the streets in the Eastrock neighborhood? I know this was a big storm, but I'm really surprised by how long it is taking the city to plow. It seems very little has been done in the past 24 hours.
  • 41 Cold Spring Street New Haven, Connecticut - East Rock
Beautiful fireworks last night in East Rock Park, and great to see so many people out. Not great seeing all the trash left behind. The city is ignoring this resource. Everything from broken glass, fireworks boxes, soda cans, cardboard boxes, charcoal dumped next to trees - this in the park and on the streets around it. The maintenance of this park should not be left to the neighbors.

The sidewalk on Coldspring St (Coldspring/Canner) by Livingston 219 has been very poorly cleared after the storm last night. I almost wiped out twice walking home alongside this house. I believe, if you have a home on a corner, you are responsible for shoveling both in front of and along the side of your house.
