  • Willow Street Exit 6 New Haven, Connecticut - East Rock

The homeless camp by the water in the woods off of Exit 6 between the off ramps from 91 N and 91 S is starting up again and it needs to be broken up ASAP! I can not comprehend how this is allowed to go on.

The other night my wife and I were coming off the exit and we saw a man carrying a bull rake, shovel and a Fed-Ex package walking towards the camp coming down Willow St. from the East Rock area. He opened the package, took whatever was inside, threw the box on the ground and kept walking towards the camp. I hate to jump to conclusions but it seems pretty clear that this individual stole the rake and shovel from someone's yard and stole the Fed-Ex package from someone's yard. I live in East Rock and had several packages stolen off my porch last summer. I'm not saying these individuals are responsible but they are clearly committing crime in the East Rock area and I am sick of it.

Last summer this camp was allowed to exist and grow into the late fall. The individuals who are living here litter the area with their garbage and regularly hold up traffic with their panhandling. Can somebody please stop looking the other way and do something about this?

5-25 Canner Street New Haven, Connecticut - East Rock
Drug deals throughout the day on Canner St between Nicoll and Foster St. Buyers will park and wait in their car, then the seller will drive through for sometimes multiple transactions. 5-10 transactions a day is average-and this is just when I'm at home to witness it.

Public trash barrels on Orange St., from Cottage St. to Willow St. are overflowing with garbage and plastic bags full of dog excrement. Aside from being absolutely disgusting and filthy (and making New Haven look like a third world city) these bags are leaking disease ridden fecal waste onto the sidewalks and streets. The even in sub-zero weather, the stench is horrible too.

About a dozen dirt bikes were riding on the soccer fields early this evening, along with 4 ATVs. It was very noisy, unsafe with speeding along English Drive, and the wheelies/speeding are probably harming the fields.

Was stopped at a traffic light this morning behind a cruiser, license plate 168 NH, and the driving officer was littering a food or candy wrapper out the driver's side window.

I have nothing but respect for New Haven's hard working officers, but if they don't have respect for my neighborhood, then they should get a new job. Completely unacceptable.

If the City removes the redundant traffic signals on each each signal post on Orange Street (which is a two lane road, not a four lane road) then cars may stop pulling into the bicycle lane to do a right-on-red....plus the city would be able to use the spiffy, relatively new LED signals to upgrade elsewhere and save some cash.
  • East Rock Park Road New Haven, Connecticut - East Rock

East Rock Park Road is a beautiful lane through and alongside the park. It would be perfect for walking, jogging, and biking if it weren't for the fact that people in cars barrel down it at unsafe speeds seeking a shortcut to Whitney Avenue. They often drive right out into Whitney without stopping, heedless of pedestrians on the sidewalk at Whitney.

People also frequently use the road for unsightly and unhealthy illegal dumping.

Since there is no destination on this stretch of road—no houses or other buildings or even the park are currently accessible from any point between East Rock Road and Whitney—it seems that from a vehicular standpoint, its only purpose is to shave a few seconds off a trip north on Whitney Avenue. It seems to me that with little consequence to the traffic system, this road could be closed to auto traffic by installing bollards or the like, leaving it to the enjoyment of pedestrians, runners, and cyclists.

2-3 HUGE deep potholes, may have been filled before but now are large, deep, and wide. Huge safety issue for cars and bikes

  • East Rock Park New Haven, CT - East Rock
Especially on the Davis St. side of the East Rock Park, there's been an increase in the ongoing problem of people meeting up for sex in wooded areas of the park. Can't walk my dog without interrupting something, and definitely can't let my kid walk there alone.
  • Near Exit 6 I-91 New Haven, Connecticut - East Rock
The City cleared a homeless encampment late last fall. The camp was by the banks of the Mill River. Land access is from the Willow Street entrance to Route 91. Here is the problem: Although the residents were expelled and their possessions impounded, many of those possessions - including furniture and trash - were simply left behind. There are at least three camps clearly visible from the river where lots and lots of stuff is just piled up to rot. This is not a good use of land that abuts onto East Rock Park! One nice young couple even bagged up their trash (at least 30 bin bags full) but it's still there by the riverbank. Can the sites be visited and cleaned up? It is really an eyesore for park users and will become a health hazard as the stuff decays.
