Notified About

  • 2179 Massachusetts Ave Cambridge, MA, 02140, USA - North Cambridge
When driving north/westbound on Mass Ave, the green left turn arrow onto Rindge Ave turns off (leaving a normal green light) 5-7 seconds before oncoming traffic receives their green light. This arbitrary period is confusing, because the discrepancy is long enough that a number of cars can make the left, but it is unclear when oncoming traffic will begin and I have seen a few issues during the morning commute, as well as being on the other side of Mass Ave on a bicycle and having cars get stuck in the intersection and then try to go around each other, dangerously intersecting with the bike lane at an inappropriate time.
  • 33 Everett St Cambridge, MA 02138, USA - Agassiz-Harvard
Harvard University landscaper using a very loud leaf blower blowing dirt into the street on cars and pedestrians.
  • 2182-2196 Massachusetts Ave Cambridge, MA, 02140, USA - North Cambridge

At the Mass Ave/Rindge Ave intersection, there is a lagging right-turn green arrow for the Rindge approach. When this phase operates simultaneously with the NB Mass Ave protected left turn, it displays a green right arrow and follows it with just a steady red; no yellow change interval is ever displayed.

This operation is an MUTCD violation (and, thus, a violation of state law), but more importantly it can be a contributing factor in an increase number of rear-end crashes.

This problem can easily be corrected by changing the green arrows out with bi-modal green/yellow arrows in the same housing.

  • 57-67 Field Street Cambridge, Massachusetts - Neighborhood 9

Three instances of an unidentified traffic sign were posted on Field St within the past weeks, see attached photo. The closest official sign I can find is "no bicycle R5-6" sign, see Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices 2009 Edition with Revision Numbers 1 and 2 incorporated, Section 2B.39, page 75. Also see Massachusetts Driver's Manual, Appendix E, page 155. However, the signs on Field St are clearly different, they do not have an officially defined meaning, and are thus difficult to interpret.

    1. Please comment on the meaning of the signs.
    2. Please clarify the scope of the signs. The one in the photo, in particular, faces the street, implying that is prohibits certain kinds of vehicular traffic onto the sidewalk, on the sidewalk, or through the fence. The other two are facing one traffic direction along the street, implying that they impose restrictions on that single direction, but not in the other direction. Please confirm.
    3. Please comment on the urban planning principles behind installing these signs.

    Thank you.
