  • Harvard St & Trowbridge St Cambridge, MA, 02138, USA - Mid-Cambridge
I love the shared streets - I've been walking a lot to get exercise since the pandemic started, and I appreciate having a place where I can keep a distance from other pedestrians (very difficult otherwise in the heart of Cambridge) while still getting my exercise. I'm conscientious about other street users and walk towards the edge of the street to leave plenty of room for cars and cyclists to get through. I think most other users of the streets, including drivers, have also been conscientious in their use, but today I was harassed by a driver when walking on Harvard Street, who yelled for me to get onto the sidewalk since there wasn't a nearby pedestrian on the sidewalk at that time. (There was also another car further down the street that zoomed by much faster than the 10 mph speed limit, although overall I've seen cars moving slowly on these streets which I appreciate.) I wonder if this harassment was a result of poor understanding of the shared streets by the driver, and if so, perhaps clearer signage or barriers would help.

Just curious at what point does CHA step in here and help with the situation. People keep saying not to call the police which is odd to me yet the CHA is just allowing their residents to light off fireworks day and night? The non obnoxious people of the neighborhood are getting pretty tired of it and it's clear where the issue is coming from.
  • 111-167 Tremont St Cambridge, MA, 02139, USA - Wellington-Harrington

I posted this issue previously, but the comments got out of hand.

Again, people were honking furiously at the garbage trucks on Tremont St. around noon today while the collectors were trying to do their jobs. There was more honking from a different episode at 8AM because two very large trucks were not able to pass each other on the street. The response to my last ticket was that there were no feasible actions to take. I disagree, and propose:

    1) Cambridge should acknowledge that we have far more vehicles per hour than what is considered normal for a residential street (especially compared to neighboring Norfolk St., for example). I estimate over 100 vehicles per hour for a good period of the day, with a good chunk of that number being heavy trucks. Please use this information to understand why there is support from our neighbors to turn our small, traffic-burdened street into a Shared Street.
    2) Install some "No honking", "No idling" signage to remind drivers to stop impacting residents with their driving behaviors.
    3) Speak with some of the trash collectors and make sure they don't feel harassed. Invite them to ask if they would like a police or city escort if they have any frustrations with this aspect of the route.
    4) Encourage Cambridge police to ensure residents through public channels that they are aware and taking aggressive driving seriously (including needless honking). For reference, their current Twitter has no traffic tips, but their banner photo shows an officer standing in a bike lane...Enforcement was understandably low at the height of COVID here, but traffic is back to its old rates and traffic safety metrics are grim in Massachusetts this year, so focusing enforcement on traffic again makes sense.

    Thank you.

I noticed that the compost and trash were being put into the same truck and I wanted to know why. What is the point of composting if it’s being thrown out with trash?
  • Inman Sq Cambridge, MA, 02139, USA - Wellington-Harrington
There are many joggers in this area who are not wearing masks. This is a violation of local rules and is a very serious public health hazard as they may be asymptomatic but spreading COVID-19. Please have the police vigorously enforce the rules and begin ticketing these joggers who believe the rules don't apply to them.

Trash from this address was dumped all over the street and bike lane, obstructing people walking as we try to maintain social distance. Trash is loose all over the street.

Good thing Cambridge has decided not to re-open schools. Now the front entrance to the high school can be used as an overnight camp ground and littered with trash, human waste and needles. Cambridge residents and taxpayers have had enough of this already. Clean it up!
