This is a major problem across the city but this intersection is particularly bad. I have reported similar issues before, including the Dark Gray coty issued Expedition that I see frequently making illegal left turns here and parked illegally on state street in very dangerous spots. I also see police cars and buses run the same red light further up state on almost a daily basis. In the last year I've almost been run down in a crosswalk by a police car running a red light. Reporting this does nothing! Someone at a high level needs to take a hard look at the liability here and DO SOMETHING. All I can do is move away.

YES. The same holds true of the crazy intersection of York and Elm (where several streets merge together). All pedestrians in New Haven should be aware that drivers in this city grant themselves a ca. 5 seconds grace period after a light turns red to blast through it. And yellow lights do not mean "slwo down and prepare to stop," but rather "speed like hell to get through the red light" -- even in areas with heavy foot traffic. Pedestrians should NEVER step off a curb even if all signs indicate that it's safe.

I can't bring myself to close the issue because there does not seem to be any change of status. Red light running continues to be a serious issue at this and other New Haven intersections. I am not sure how you change the culture of this, but I do wish the NHPD would care about traffic enforcement and the safety of pedestrians, bicyclists, and car drivers and passengers.

A year + later and I don't see any change in the culture of red light running nor any attempt at enforcement... So how do you close an issue when it's still a huge issue in this city?

Last week I was in the bike lane on Elm at College stopped at a red light. In the lane beside me was a NH police cruiser. I kept watch on the light, saw it turn yellow for crossing traffic and the cars kept coming. Then it turned red -- fully, definitively red -- and three cars raced through.
After it was clear I and all the cars -- including the police car -- drove ahead like no big deal. No siren. No tickets. No big deal.
Lesson one. From the Mayor on down, obviously nobody in city government cares if drivers violate traffic regulations. Lesson two: NEVER step into an intersection in New Haven just because you have a walk signal or green light without making sure even more cars aren't running the light.
I wish the city would take action. Not just on this but also on the trashy Green. But I've given up on all of it. New Haven is the city where nobody cares. A nice motto.
