Gary, Not sure where you live on this lake, but we live on the SW side, near one of the culverts. If you look over this way, you'll see where I am talking about. The area where you see them growing, starts growing exponentially when left unchecked, and were they not cut down/killed back, then I guarantee they would reach wherever you happen to be, eventually. When they start going unchecked, they would take over the whole lake. And as close to the culvert especially, it gets to be a flooding and drainage issue. Trash and other lake debris gets caught up in the culvert pipes, and you can just imagine. And in addition, when they go unchecked by the City, the rest of the lake-edge plants start growing in the same manner. And aside from getting an excavator in (landscapers won't touch it for fear of ruining their equipment or taking out a protected plant life), it is impossible to do ourselves. The City has always cared for these as long as I've been here, they've just been slacking lately. I've been here 11+ years and the people who I bought this house from left me the contact info (which has since changed departments). They built this house in 1968 and according to them, it was always the responsibility of the City. So. That is why.
