Crickets

I can’t count the number of times a car (finally) stopped to let us cross Garfield, only to have the car BEHIND them zoom around to avoid the stop and almost run us over!! We’ve been an inch away from a terrible accident a hundred times at this intersection. There isn’t even a walkway for one of the crossing sides. Union&Garfield NEEDS a stop sign or a traffic light!!!! The pedestrian cross lights are not visible in the daytime, and cars are speeding at 40+ mph on this stretch.

It’s only a matter of time until someone dies trying to make it across.
PLEASE DO SOMETHING!

I opened a request like 3 years ago (ticket no 5989714) and they pretty much said there were enough accidents and that the pedestrian cross light was sufficient. Jersey City/Hudson Co is literally waiting for someone to die to change it

It’s a dangerous disaster waiting to happen. I’ve almost gotten hit and then get cursed out because drivers do not stop for the flashing lights

First things first - You have no idea how slow I go on this road on my commute ~20 mph to get cars behind me used to going slowly through the area. I care, we are listening. Most of my colleagues ride bicycles to work, taking their lives into their hands. We get it.

This statement about a traffic light or stop sign - “citing that no one has been killed yet here on Garfield Ave as the reason.” - NOPE, not even a little bit true. The reason for crash data, meaning vehicular and not involving pedestrians, is because technically a stop sign and a traffic light are for designating which vehicle has the right of way. Neither are for pedestrian safety. And sometimes they pose more of a danger to pedestrians. There are many studies on this.

This seems like a straight forward situation, but maybe there are other experiences, like drivers trying to pull onto Garfield for Bramhall... All suggestions, ideas, comments welcome.

Here is my sad bit of sarcasm, as a resident of Jersey City. It now seems the polite drivers are the ones that speed around all of the other drivers, on the shoulders or in the bicycle lanes and then come to a complete stop at the red light. They then look both ways before blowing straight through the red traffic light. Seems red lights are now merely a suggestion!

Pretty much. I drive 10 min to drop my kid off at school. Every day I see every light blatantly run. It’s so bad. I wish we had red light policing 🤷🏻‍♂️

Tbh the safest thing would be to extend a walkway along the light rail overpass with stairs/elevator on the other side. This would create and access point across Garfield completely removed from traffic ( especially once they they start developing the Pit on the other side of the LR crossing

You’re asking for a lot when the city has bigger fish to fry. A city already congested adding more lights, can you please leave jersey city alone. I would say add crossing guards during peak school and summer but that’s it. Traffic should flow to ensure a decent commute these bike lanes in jersey city already destroyed traffic time. Bad enough their wasn’t even any case study.

Ah yes. Let’s give up more to cars because in a city (not designed for cars) that should be the first mode of transportation and should override all others 🫨

Amad - The City looks at all modes of transportation and places the health and welfare of the pedestrian before the convenience of cars. While I understand that your priority is being able to drive to your destination without it taking forever, this does not mean your mode of transportation is any more important than those who walk or bicycle. Everyone should have a safe way to get to and fro with their preferred method of transportation. It is a balance. Your opinion about no more traffic lights is being noted and is appreciated. Thank you for contributing. Just make sure that when you give your very valid opinion, you are not suggesting anyone else's is less valid.

My job is to pull all the requests and suggested solutions together in a summary so that everyone can have their concerns heard and I can hand it to the engineers and planners in a concise and easy to digest manner. For years these issues have been read or glossed over because the engineers and planners were drowning in the over 1,200 requests. Now they are freed up to do what they do best and all of your comments are not in vain.

JC_Covuuch - The issue with the LR overpass is that if it becomes a possibility, that many will not have the patience to go that route, especially teens. This would need to be in addition to other fixes. You already know this though.
