Description
This intersection has been repeatedly reported for safety concerns. Repeated requests for a ramp on Hackamore at Catalina was finally performed however there was never a crosswalk marked. Since school started I've witnessed 3 kids biking home from school come extremely close to getting hits and cars locking up their brakes. There are no warning signs to drivers that anyone would want to cross. Furthermore, previous crosswalk going across Catalina was tarred over and never replaced!!! We are literally against 2 schools with hundreds of students and there are WAY too many close calls here. Somebody is going to get hurt or killed and it's going to be Town of Gilbert's fault. We need 2 crosswalks here immediately!!!!! One N to S bound pedestrians across Hackamore from the corner of Catalina, and the other across Catalina for E to W bound pedestrians. Furthermore, Hackamore is not perfectly straight and due to that, coming soundbound on Catalina and needs to turn west, if anyone is parked on the NW corner of the intersection, drivers literally have to pull halfway out into the street to see if they have a save line of vision. Likewise if anyone is parked on the NE side of the intersection.
What the request is, IN PRIORITY ORDER:
1) Both crosswalks immediately painted
2) WARNING SIGNS FOR DRIVERS THAT CROSSING IS AHEAD
3) Consider making it a 3 way stop though the insane traffic from the schools will be worse during certain periods or events.
4) Paint the curbing red on the northside of Hackamore from Mystic to the end of the No Parking zone just past Catalina. This request has been submitted previously as well and will help to control the illegal parking and hopefully stop the need for police to come out and ticket or put warning stickers on the cars. They can ignore a no parking sign, they won't ignore a sign and a red curb. If they do, ticket or tow!

Dear 311 User -
Staff will conduct the necessary data collection to determine if a crosswalk and/or stop sign is warranted.
Date collection will occur in fall when it is likely more students would be walking to school due to cooler weather.
Thank you for your patience.

Dear 311 User -
We have finished our review of the intersection Hackamore Ave and Catalina Street. We don’t recommend any changes to the traffic control and the existing configuration is a operates reasonable. In addition, we also don’t recommend the north and south crosswalk. There was three pedestrian and one cyclist document using the east and west leg of the intersection. There has been a lot of discussion and studies on the safety benefit of marked versus unmarked crosswalks. One of these studies performed for Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) in 2002 by Zegeer, Stewart, and Huang entitled "Safety Effects of Marked vs Unmarked Crosswalks at Uncontrolled Locations: Executive Summary and Recommended Guidelines". “The study results revealed that under no condition was the presence of a marked crosswalk alone at an uncontrolled location associated with a significantly lower pedestrian crash rate compared to an unmarked crosswalk.” This may seem counterintuitive, but statistics presented in studies supported this guidance. This may occur because pedestrians believe and expect a motorist to stop for them in a crosswalk.
Thank you for using 311.
