Description

Concern: During all summer, a large amount of standing water has been at the confluence of properties 2965 Hickory lane, 2950 Devonshire Rd. & 2972 Devonshire Rd. The standing water plus debris constantly breeds mosquitos. Due to concerns for our health, we have been unable to use of our backyard.
Request: Please let us know if there is any possible solution to this problem.

In addition to the three addresses cited, the standing water also adjoins 2969 Hickory Lane. With the recent dry weather, the water has receded somewhat (see photos). I couple of weeks ago, the "pond" was at least three feet deeper than it is now and covered at least five times the current surface area. In addition to the mosquitos, we're concerned that the long-term presence of this standing water will also kill some of the trees.

Due to the recent dry weather, the later level is down from where it was a couple of weeks ago, when t was at least three feet deeper than shown in the photo and covered about five times the surface area. In addition to the mosquitos, we're concerned that the persistent presence of this water will kill trees in the area.

A rain garden is supposed to hold water for a short period of time so it can soak into the soil. The standing water in this situation can be up to five feet deep and doesn't soak into the soil for several months, resulting in a stagnant mosquito breeding ground. I'd think it needs to be drained, presumably into the storm sewer and ultimately into the Huron River. I hope the city can help us eliminate this problem!

To further illustrate the extent of the water drain issue, here's a photo from this spring showing the magnitude of the flooding. The residents surrounding this area are hopeful that the city can help us resolve this problem.

The clogged drain in question is a private drain. Maintenance of the drain is the responsibility of the property owner. Staff met with homeowner of 2950 Devonshire to discuss the issue.
