Im a neighbor crossing the intersection twice a day.
The real danger is the speeding drivers , that's where we realy need to do something.

Good afternoon! This is the assistant city planner, Tom L. Novak. I had approved a fence permit for this location back on July 21st, 2023. They had to take down and then move their fence over due to the widening of Chicago St.
The public right-of-way (public land) of Chicago St. extends a few feet north beyond the public sidewalk. (That is, into the grass between sidewalk and home.) I worked with City's Engineering Dept. on making sure the fence would be setback the full amount from that sidewalk so that the fence was entirely on their private property. In general, the rule for fences at corners (intersections) is for a solid fence over 4' tall to be set back from the corner by at least 10' to 15' in both directions. This is to keep a "vision clearance triangle" open for drivers who are turning, like you, and for pedestrians. This fence layout exceeds that requirement. Vehicles approaching from the west on Chicago St. (in the southern lanes of traffic on Chicago St.) should not be blocked by view of the fence for a good distance -- from at least two blocks over, where Towle Ave. intersects. Visibility of those approaching from the east on Chicago Ave. (coming from Calumet Ave.) are not affected by the fence.
However, I will check again with Engineering Dept. on that fence's required setback distance from the Chicago Ave. sidewalk, then we can have Inspections Dept. measure the actual distance to make sure they match.
