  With regards to traffic calming, Pearl Street is considered an arterial which is meant to collect traffic from major and local roads to connect to major destinations or other major or local roads. This means that the tools available to slow traffic are much different than what you might see on a residential street, such as speed humps or narrower roadways. For arterials streets, the design of the roadway is the most useful tool to calm traffic, which means adding in bike facilities, angle parking, parking on both sides, curb bulbs to narrow the roadway.

  Another tool some neighborhoods have use on arterials is a radar speed sign that would be mounted on a pole and is semi-permanent. Some drivers will still disregard the sign, but the everyday driver may pay attention and change behavior.

  I will forward this request to Tacoma Police Department. I don’t know what their wait list or timing to post them are, but they do their best to move those signs around the city.

  N Pearl St is also a state highway, and any work beyond maintenance requires approval by the Washington State Dept. of Transportation.
