I tend to cross where ever clear as many motorists simply do not stop when using the cross walk. At least two times I have seen cars switch over to the oncoming lane to avoid stopping for the people in the crosswalk. Please monitor the situation. Another time a Marlborough Officer signaled me to cross and still two drivers in the opposite direction did not stop. Lucky the Officer was there to issue them a citation.

Very few people stop for pedestrians in this crosswalk. As it is the walkway from our parking lot to our home, it would be nice to see something done to raise awareness of drivers. I don't like playing chicken every day to get to my front door!

Any update on this??

This morning I was again almost steamrolled by a large car that ignored the fact I was in the MIDDLE of the road in the crosswalk and just swerved around me.

This is getting ridiculous.

PLEASE consider a center cone or flashing signs ASAP. It's o my going to get worse as we approach winter.

Please help to resolve this issue. This is an unsafe crosswalk as many drivers may not actually see the pedestrians until it is too late. In downtown Marlborough drivers stop for pedestrians and it would be great to have the same result here. Possible solutions: solar signs, painted crosswalk, Pedestrian sign in center of street, police presence, speed monitoring roadside device.

The issue has been closed because the current configuration of the existing crosswalks meet the MUTCD standards for roadway markings. The resources for the addition of lighted signage approx 3200.00 ea is a subject of appropriation. At this time the requested additions are deemed not necessary.

What steps need to be taken to have this addressed by the city? Although the roadway markings may meet the code, it doesn't address the fact that almost every single car that passes in front of my home ignores the crosswalk markings.

I'd be happy to provide photos of cars as they completely disregard the crosswalk markings, swerve around people in the middle of the crosswalk, and speed down (or up) the street. Would that make a difference in how this is handled?

Would you kindly provide the name of someone the owners and residents of 406 Lincoln can discuss this further with? We certainly deserve an opportunity to voice our concerns in person.

That is a shame! Please reconsider opening this issue to address this safety concern. This is actually a very dangerous section to cross as cars are speeding. There are no speed limit signs posted and the crosswalk area is not that visible to motorist. This crosswalk section does need to be updated and the city shouldn't dismiss this matter. Thank you

I'm going to step in and address this issue on the behalf of the Public Works Department as a whole. This is a difficult situation at best and finding a mutually agreeable solution may prove rather difficult.

First, to be clear, all crosswalks were repainted this year per the city standard. The crosswalk in question was in fact repainted earlier this year as part of this program. The paint does fade with time and weather, and will need to be repainted over time like all of the rest. As far as adding additional signage to this particular crosswalk as suggested, it has been determined by the City's Traffic Commission, that no additional signage is required. It is also my understanding that the City has had discussions with representatives of the Artist’s Lofts Condominiums about their supplying their own pedestrian sign in the middle of the roadway with the understanding that they maintain it (i.e. put it out and take it in each day) just like the signs on Main Street that are maintained by business owners there.

I also want to assure everyone that there indeed has been much discussion and thought spent on determining the best course of action in this matter. In the end, it comes down to the unfortunate fact that this a poor location for a crosswalk. It was approved as part of the initial site plan for the condominiums, however, the Department of Public Works was never a proponent of the location. The buildings location is a short distance from the fully signalized intersection at Lincoln Street and Pleasant Street. There are pedestrians signals at that intersection. It is because if this proximity that an additional crosswalk is unwarranted. If residents truly feel unsafe by traffic conditions directly in front of their building, they have the option available to them to cross safely at Pleasant Street. Is this ideal or convenient? That’s a matter of opinion to the person crossing the street. Still, the option exists and it meets all existing requirements for safely crossing the street. It is because of this that the Traffic Commission has, on several occasions, determined that no additional measures need be taken.

I realize that this is not the answer residents are looking for. In fact, I empathize with your complaint. I encourage those concerned to again approach the Traffic Commission and work together to resolve the issue. I would also encourage you to approach the Police Department and request they monitor the crosswalk more closely. It may also make sense to involve your City Councilor and make him aware of the condition that exists. Dialogue will be the key to resolution in this matter.

It is my hope that this helps you to better understand the issue at hand. Please know that we at Public Works do hear you concerns and do care about finding a resolution within the existing rules and regulations as they pertain to this matter. I am going to leave this issue “Acknowledged” and not close it out as it is clearly a work in progress, albeit a lengthy one.

I wanted to get an update to everyone: Public Works has requested that this issue be added to the next Traffic Commission meeting agenda. The Traffic Commission will hear this issue at it's next meeting which will be held at the following time/location:

Where: City Hall, first floor conference room

We encourage anyone with a vested interest in this matter to attend and be prepared to present their case to the committee. We are just going through older issues and cleaning up those issues that have either been resolved or no longer should remain in an 'open' status. I know this has been a difficult issue to rectify, but it sounds like the proper course to a resolution is being followed by those involved.

This is a crosswalk on Edgell Road in Framingham. Traffic here is similar to Lincoln Street in Marlborough. You can see they've not only painted the crosswalk itself, but have installed a solar powered signal to alert drivers that people are crossing.

That looks like a great solution to the situation on Edgell Road Framingham! Feel free offer this as an alternative to the Marlborough Traffic Commission when making your case, although it is quite costly. There is a Traffic Commission meeting this morning at 10AM at City Hall. Please attend!! This issue is actually on today's agenda under 'Old Business' and would not require a suspension of the rules to be heard.

I must respectfully disagree that this issue is moving toward a resolution. We are still having issues whenever we attempt to use the crosswalk. My wife and I were almost run down this weekend, and as the car slammed on its brakes it was almost rear ended by a Marlborough Police car. I thought for sure the officer would reprimand the driver ahead of him, but he did not.

Many residents of 406 Lincoln attended the traffic commission meeting this fall, and were told that as part of the plan to increase safety, the police department would monitor the traffic/speed of motorists. This hasn't happened. We need to increase the visibility of the crosswalk. By upgrading the signs currently in place to ones that are illuminated, and painting the crosswalk itself a high visibility color.

You have 30 tax paying condominium owners living in our building who deserve the ability to cross the street to get to their parking spaces. It's not the fault of those who live there that the parking lot was placed where it is - we simply need to feel safe crossing the street when we walk out our front door.

What will happen when CVS moves in at the lights up the street? It's going to get worse, that's what.

Please do not consider this issue resolved, or on the way to resolution. Until we see some real changes made, it simply can't be put to rest.

The location will be painted along with all the other crosswalks in the city starting 5/18/16. It will be painted according to MUTCD standards as required.
