With the greatly increased traffic on Whitesburg Drive due to roadwork on the Parkway, southbound traffic on Whitesburg needs a protected turn signal onto Sherwood Drive. This morning at 8am there was a line of 6 cars (all that would fit in the turn lane) waiting to turn. After waiting through several signal cycles with no ability to cross, drivers decided to turn on a red light as it was their only opportunity. With each signal cycle, one or two cars would turn during the red light, unless northbound Whitesburg traffic was blocking the intersection, which happened about every other cycle. I understand that there will be more congestion due to the road work and I try to give myself extra time, but this particular situation is leading to dangerous behavior and could easily be remedied by a protected turn signal during high-traffic times.
