Investigating

I will assign someone to come out and assess the situation. Keep in mind that if the vehicles are legally plated and parked, there is no limit to the number of vehicles someone may own at a specific address. They ARE required to have proper and current plates and to be moved every 72-96 hrs

Is it not true that the street is not to be used as a parking lot? This individual monopolizes the parking spots of the neighbors to either side of him to the point where their visitors never have a place to park when visiting. He parks in these spots every day and night

That is absolutely true. I believe that is why they require you to move your vehicle every 72-96 hrs depending on whether you use city ordinance or state law. We don't know who's moving their vehicle or when they do it. That's where citizens such as yourself assist us by notifying us. If it appears that the vehicles have been sitting for too long we red tag them, requiring the owner to move them. If the owner has all of the vehicles registered properly and moves them every 3 or 4 days he is compliant. If he has a large number of vehicles it just makes him/her rude and inconsiderate but not a in violation. Sgt. Muta will check and see if there are any violations that he can cite or red tag.

Must be a Jackson St. thing we have the same issues in the 6900 block one family parks everywhere but in their drive way. Very inconsiderate to say the least!

Iv'e checked this location twice in the last two weeks. Again, I found only two vehicles parked in the driveway, one SUV legally plated and a red pickup with expired Il plates. Owner advised me last week that he was in the process of acquiring registration on that vehicle. Upon inspection yesterday, vehicle still had expired registration. I tagged the vehicle for 10 days. As for the parking issues on the street, again I did not find any vehicles parked in front of this residence, or any others nearby in violation. I believe Captain Alcox explained city ordinance in detail.

We have the same problem on Jarnecke Street . 7127 parks disrepectfully in many neighbors spots. I am dealing with Medical issues and would like to know how to get a residence only parking sign is it possible? Truly what is Hammond due for the residence that are paying taxes. We should be able to park in front of our own home!

Dear Rev. Rose Fier: Street parking is public parking, so it can be a challenge to actively enforce non-residents taking up parking on the average street. If you wish to have a trial run of a resident only parking sign on your block, please petition the Board of Public Works. They meet every Thursday at 9am on the 2nd floor of City Hall, and the end of every meeting is open to the public. This will set up a resident parking pass & visitor parking pass system for your area. However, all cars owned by a resident of your block will still be able to legally park on the street, so it may not always solve one's issue. We do sympathize with your situation.
