There used to be a large bike rack in front of Whole Foods, which the City of Evanston decided to replace with three small racks, each of which can only accommodate two bikes. The result of this shortsighted beautification can be seen right around the corner where all the overflow bikes are now chained to the ornamental fences if the flower beds.
What was the city thinking? Are they trying to discourage bicycle riding in Evanston?

Thank you for writing in to discuss the improvements along Church Street.
The new streetscape elements you see installed along Church Street are to 1. Provide better Pedestrian Lighting and Safety and 2. to provide bike racks throughout a block to allow for better bike parking throughout downtown. I walked the site with the Director of Public Works, Suzette Robinson last week to discuss the bike parking issue in front of Whole Foods. The plan is to place 3-4 rack sets between each of the planters along Chicago Avenue to provide even more parking in front of the Whole Foods, instead of along Church Street, which is why you see so few racks placed there now.
I will ensure that Public Works gets this message and we work on solving this issue as soon as we possibly can. Please know the intent is not to reduce the number of bike parking opportunities, but rather to increase them wherever we can.
