The situation at Main and 59 is out of control. Someone is going to get hurt with all the people milling about in the middle of the street, paying no attention to traffic, or so cracked out they don't know where they are.
This area has definitely been getting worse in terms of litter, drug-use, and vagrancy. At night people expand into the old wendy's parking lot and further under the overpass. The people that gather here have no regard for road traffic nor each other. I can't tell you how many times I've seen people passed out on the sidewalks or in drug-induced dazes only to be ignored by their counterparts and left to fend for themselves even though they're obviously in no condition to do so.
Police alone aren't going to be able to solve this problem - the catch and release policy is not going to fix this issue. The individuals picked up by law enforcement just go right back to the same spot after they get out and are more likely to resort to selling spice/other drugs and aggressive begging in order to pay fines.
Judson is right, however, seeing as how there's already been a stabbing (last week) due to the volatility and potential mental instability of the individuals who gather there. This is a serious issue that needs to be addressed in a comprehensive way.
Please help the taxpayers of this neighborhood. Whether it's TXDOT or HPD or Mayor Turner, someone needs to pay attention to this inexcusable mess. These people are using the underpass and neighboring areas to use the bathroom, throw their trash, and sleep. They have caused an unsanitary and dangerous situation to pedestrians and drivers. PLEASE HELP!!!!
I am a Midtown resident and property owner. Please call Midtown Houston to advocate for this problem to be proactively addressed. There are other areas in Midtown that are out-of-control as well. Midtown Houston (via my taxes) pays constables to patrol Midtown over $535,000 a year. Please attend our next Public Safety meeting on September 20 @ 11:30am at 410 Pierce St., 3rd floor conference room. Another option is to get a group together to address City Council. From what I understand, the property under the bridge is TXDOT's, but they share responsibility with the City. Neither agencies are doing anything, though HPD has asked them to.
Thank you for taking the time to report your concern to Midtown. Midtown cannot directly correct issues which are by nature law enforcement related. Attached are the contact numbers for the law enforcement agencies primarily involved in the Midtown area. Please contact them directly for this or similar issues.
Correction: The Public Safety meeting was moved to 6pm at Central Bank in Midtown, Sept. 20. I hope you can make it to speak up! :) I look forward to meeting you.
If it is under i59 then it is the responsibility of TXDoT. They are aware of the problem and working with Midtown Management District and the City of Houston to resolve it. Thanks!
Thanks Zeezee, we have had crews out there several times and will continue to do so. As you well know, it's an ongoing issue and we're working to find a long-term solution. Thanks again for your help!
