Thank you for your comment.
As this item has been illegally dumped on private property/near a private dumpster, filing a police report to the Newport Police Department at (401)847-1306 is standard procedure for any illegal activity. By filing this report we can hopefully deter any future illegal behavior. We also recommended you contact the owner of the private dumpster as they are most likely responsible for the item in question.
Thank you for keeping Newport Clean and Green.
I have already contacted the owner of the dumpster. They are not responsible for the dumping. They and I agree that someone came by with the futon hoping to dump it into the (locked) dumpster. I have learned from experience that notifying the police does nothing toward removing a dumped item. In fact, in another instance a while ago, the police denied that had anything to do with it at all and that I should call Clean Cities. I must say that it is ultimately the city's job to remove this unsightly mess. I have spoken with Lynn Ceglie and other city people before and I thought that this had been worked out. the departments should get it straight about which one will actually remove the trash and not expect the taxpayer to get the runaround among Clean Cities, the Police and Zoning. Please re-open this and leave it open until the trash is actually picked up. Surely there is a policy for this sort of thing????
It is unfortunate that certain individuals are not responsible for their own waste and do not follow proper disposal procedures that are available to them. Standard procedure for any illegal activity, including illegal dumping, is to report this directly to the Newport Police Department. We can then work with them internally once the report is filed. Please keep in mind, Clean City is responsible for city owned property, not private property. This item is on private property.
