Thanks Officer Gillam for be so observant we want our kids safe and crossing guards & school traffic safe when entering or exiting the school property.

Honestly, it will be a waste of money. The Alam Easom School on Bragg Rd has flashing lights and people show a total disregard for the safety of children & the Crossing Guard. The speed is 25 mph from 0730-0830 and 2:30-3:30 pm and it might as well be non-existent. The Fayetteville Police will not pull over speeding cars. I was told by a reliable source that the last Police Chief mandated that officers don't pull over speeders so they don't create any problems.

Police Officers are PAID Public Servants and paid with city property tax $$$$$$ and YES pulling over a speeding car is their job if their cruiser is RADAR Equipped.

P.S. They don't have any problem pulling over SPEEDING VEHICLES on Filyaw between Yadkin Rd. & Reilly Rd. over the posted 35 MPH Speed Limit on Filyaw and that isn't in a school zone. There were not any WARNING LIGHTS on Bonanza Drive until an ELEMENTARY Student was killed not far from Fayetteville Fire Station # 9 on Bonanza CROSSING in a SCHOOL ZONE.

Now there are lights there now and Fayetteville Police doing RADAR between Santa Fe & Morganton which is almost completely SCHOOL ZONE ENFORCED with the 3 schools there. Two on Bonanza & 1 on Morganton @ the corner of Morganton & Bonanza.

Today my confidence was restored as the Fayetteville Police Department was conducting Speed Enforcement in the School Zone for Alma Easom. It's been quite the struggle. I'm hoping stiff fines were handed out as these Officers were stopping violators one after another. Lt. Brian Gainey had men & women assigned to him throwing the hammer down! It's sad that citizens in Fayetteville can't drive the posted speed limit in a School Zone fully knowing they could hit or kill an innocent child, parent, or Crossing Guard. Unacceptable in my book. Well done Fayetteville Police Officers! This is exactly what we've been begging for.

Rudy, I am the creator of this request and likely the officer you saw today conducting speed enforcement. We do pull over violators when calls for service allow. I saw this as an issue and created a work ticket. It is up to the City to choose to do it or not. The police officers of Fayetteville are busy, and we do the best we can with the time we have in between calls.

Bobby thanks for the info. I did EMS for @ 30 years retiring in 2009 from Ft. Bragg EMS after 16 years with them. I am still very active in community affairs & public safety in the Fayetteville & Cumberland County area. I haven't been by Terry Sanford to see what is needed. Thanks for forwarding this.

Office Gillam I think you guy's do a great job with the use of resources. A lot of citizens don't know you officers are medically trained as first responders in AHA BCLS CPR and have cruisers equipped with AED's. At last check when I was teaching American Heart Association BCLS ( Basic Cardiac Life Support ) as well as First Aid only a few cruisers were equipped. Not only do you have Police Duties you also have to treat medical emergencies before EMS or Fire & Rescue arrive on scene of a MVC or Motor Vehicle Collision.

I live in Haymount and the amount of speeders I see in a 25mph zone by the Theater is CRAZY, that is not a school zone but it is mind blowing how many people speed. I see people speeding all the time on Morganton Rd in school zones. I pay attention and lately it makes no sense why they are not pulling these cars. I do not have a speed detector but I can see they are speeding why won't the cops pull them. I notice speeding in school zones on Morganton Rd and Bragg Blvd and cops not pull these people. And I am not sure if anyone else from Fayetteville has noticed but drivers have gotten out of control. Nobody pays attention, scary driving on the roads in Fayetteville.

I appreciate your Service and attention to the Speeding Epidemic on Ft. Bragg Rd. I did make 8 calls to the PD as well as I spoke to numerous officers about the danger near the elementary school. Quite frustrating our City Government doesn't think Speeding in a School Zone is important. I'm thankful you all were able to attack this problem before someone was run over. I'm a fan of the Police Department and understand you all are underpaid and under appreciated, but thankful you're there! Be safe. Rudy

Thank you Rudy. Speeding throughout our neighborhoods and minor thoroughfares has increased over the last year or so. Evident with the increase of requests for speed humps for neighborhoods through our Traffic Engineering office. Four new ones will be installed in Vanstory within the next 4 weeks. Speeding in School Zones should not be tolerated. I have not heard back from Lee Jernigan about the lights for FTS on Ft. Bragg Road, but will report to you when I do. I am proud of the excellent work that our police officers do on a daily basis. They have the City Council's full support and commitment to have all the tools they need to keep our community safe. I agree 100 % on the speeders. Unfortunately Fayetteville PD prioritizes it's calls and during high volume times when a lot of 911 calls come in they have to respond to those emergencies. There are over 100 schools in the Fayetteville / Cumberland County are so it would be hard to have a Traffic Officer @ every school during arriving and leaving school for the day. If you are in a school zone best thing I can tell you after @ 30 years in Public Safety as an EMT-I with Ft. Bragg EMS and numerous other agencies in Massachusetts is to pu you 4-WAY FLASHERS ON WHEN ENTERING A SCHOOL ZONE. I do and it has a tendency to slow the speeders down to the 25 MPH or 35 MPH SCHOOL ZONE SPEED.
