You'd think there would more thought to pedestrian design along Montrose Blvd/Main St. at the intersection of the Museum District and Hermann Park as this is a one of the major icons of Houston. One of the best things about Montrose is having so many great things nearby. But, agreed- this intersection needs major improvements such as installing missing sidewalks.

The intersection is a mess because it is a botched traffic circle pattern. It looks like a traffic circle, but doesn't function like one. In typical traffic circles the cars in the circle have the right of way. Cars entering the circle must yield to them. For such an international, cosmopolitan city, Houston really got this one wrong, IMHO.

@Jmoudry - - I agree. I am not sure what the designers had in mind. The grand fountain evokes a classic traffic circle, but these also have generous crosswalks, signals at all entrances and pedestrian access to the circle itself. When I think of traffic circles, I think of Columbus Circle in NY (http://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Columbus_Circle). The one around the Mecom fountain feels more like a high speed version of something one would find at the end of a suburban cul-d-sac.
