I have seen cars driving in the bike lanes on Hilton, both to make turns and using them as a second traffic lane (today it was a dark Chevy Venture, plate PTE INC). Possibly consider installing vehicle deterrents at major intersections.

The Hilton Road bike lanes were put in with a road diet. Studies shows such diets such as this reduce crashes, reduce excessive speeding , improve area businesses, make it easier for pedestrians to cross the street, and provide bike lanes. If you're against the Hilton bike lanes, you against all these benefits as well.
I never heard nor saw *any* petitions against this road diet when it was proposed. I believe you made that up. This was not done with federal funds either. It was not done for Royal Oak residents.

@anonymous: Whether or not you agree with having the bike lane, the point is that on several occasions, I have seen people driving cars in the bike lane making it unsafe for the people that use it. I like to think that laws upholding the safety of our community members would trump those of any ideology you may have.
This is not a forum to debate the existence of the bike lanes, but to report an unsafe condition in the city. I suggest you take up your argument with city council--no one here wants to hear it.

@anonymous, I have lived in this area for over 12 years and I really love it here. I also ride my bike more months than not throughout the year, often on these lanes.
Since you have so many "FACTS" and are just dying to share them, I suggest you lodge your own issue on this site about the existence of the lanes rather than threadjack this one. This complaint was originally lodged to address the safe use of existing infrastructure in the city. I'm sure lots of people would love to hear what you have to spout (just not me).

Many people feel the same way about bike lanes. However, studies show that bike lanes are safer especially when compared with sidewalks. And when you're on a sidewalk, people on foot have the right-of-way, not cyclists.
On the topic of cars in the bike lanes, last week a Ferndale police officer was standing in and blocking the bike lane on SB Hilton south of I-696. Presumably he was looking for speeding motorists. It seems there are better locations on that road that don't force cyclists out into the vehicle travel lane.
