I'm not sure what manipulatives the Lake Elsinore PD has at their disposal, but as a new resident to Lake Elsinore and Tuscany Hills from Huntington Beach I'd like to contribute an idea that seemed to be most effective in HB. The PD would place a large Speed Indicator on the side of the road showing traffic EXACTLY how fast they were going as well as POSTED speed limit. When the speeder reached even a mile above the limit the speed indicator would FLASH in RED exactly how fast they were going. The machine could actually indicate the speed from a far distance enabling the speeder to see their speed in FLASHING RED for several seconds before they passed the machine. I've witnessed many speeders slowing down when their speeding crime is visible in FLASHING RED for all to see! I believe this machine also kept account of how many vehicles, time, day, etc. and the speed they were going. I think this would clearly show the problem to help possibly find a solution i.e. speed bumps, more stop signs, patrolling for speeding tickets...WHATEVER works :) Maybe this machine is available or can be borrowed from another city? The ones I've seen are on wheels much like a small trailer, I'm sure many of you have seen what I'm referring to. We get the same speeders coming into Valtelena especially after work hours, early evening, and late at night.

I received the following via email today from the Lake Elsinore City Manager Grant Yates:

"Ken Seumalo is our City Engineer and is aware of your request. There is a very prescribed process that the Engineering Department will go through to determine if there is an actual problem and if there is, then the next step is to identify and prioritize funding to implement any actual changes. This process will take some time and we will get back to you in the next 2-3 weeks."

I received the following via email today from Mike Norkin, the Chairman of the Lake Elsinore Public Safety Advisory Commission:

"In regards to working on other speed control measures, you would need to deal with the City of Lake Elsinore. The Police Department's responsibility is traffic enforcement. The city traffic engineer, city manager, city council, and even public safety advisory commission can all handle those discussions. I would suggest that you attend our upcoming meeting in February. I will be there, and I will personally introduce you to the appropriate city staff. There is a vetting process involved in making changes you request, but the first step is to come to a PSAC meeting and make the request. At that point, the city can decide to investigate the issue with the traffic engineer and city engineer, and they will present their findings for the city council to review. There are many steps involved, and I can tell you, several other areas of the city have asked for speed surveys etc, and the outcome isn't always what the residents think it will be. When surveys are done, if a certain percentage of the vehicles are traveling over a specific speed, you may actually find that the law supports raising the speed limit, rather than enforcing a slower speed. Additionally, the Fire Dept is not a fan of speed bumps, as they slow response times, cause damage to their vehicles etc. There are many things to consider when making these changes and that is why sitting down with the appropriate people and having a good dialog is best at this point."

OH NO :( Don't raise the speed limit....YUK scarey thought. Good information to have, I never dreamed that a survey could actually work in reverse.....

There are fire dept friendly speed bump that are spaced apart for the engines wheels to clear but regular vehicles can only go around with one tire. It would be a great idea. Or purchase portable speed bumps, I will have some in front of my house soon

The speeding on Via de la Valle continues to be seriously dangerous including drag racing and speeding over 80 miles an hour. I've made multiple calls to law enforcement as the issues endangers the life of my family especially my children on a consistent basis. I understand that speed bumps are not a favorite for the fire department but neither are lives being put in danger without any speed barriers. I really hope that there is a concrete plan and response to this complaint. As a citizen I will have to continue to make calls as I deem necessary but my only goal is that action is taken to remedy this dangerous situation.
