Description
There is a light for this crossing in a 40 mph street. The first signs for the light is about 1/4 block from the crosswalk. SW Fairlawn is a very busy street. The school children used to go to school at McClure were from the west side of Fairlawn. The children who went to Crestview. The deal with this is that kids didn't cross the crazy busy SW Fairlawn Street. The sign (when you are driving south is covered by tree leaves - now the leaves are coming down - thank goodness) is so close to the crosswalk it is almost laughable (if you don't care about children). I know that many busy streets have speed limit changes. SW Fairlawn is 40 mph...CRAZY! I know some places that are busy have flashing lights. This place doesn't. Some places have flashing lights and stop lights. This intersection has a stop light. Not enough warning about the crosswalk. Kids are careful, but they are kids. Most of them aren't on their phones (like the drivers are) or eating a sandwich (they are walking home from school - excited about getting home to their pet). PLEASE look at this intersection. Please drive there both ways. Going south and then going north on SW Fairlawn. Ask yourself would you want your children walking across there at a busy time. Looked at the distances of the crosswalks from schools. Not a set distance either. Thank you for your time. I think our city commissioners and workers do an excellent job. I don't complain about most things. This scares the you-know-what out of me. I called 501 and they said no-one will listen to them. That seems crazy because they are our children's educators and protectors. Thank you again. I look forward to hearing from you. I have called your office before. My daughter in law has called. We just wan to protect our kids!!! All kids!!!!

Upon initial investigation, the push-control for the North-South ped crossing signal was inoperative and was replaced today.
The traffic light was then checked for proper function and was verified to be working correctly. When pedestrians are signalled to cross Fairlawn legally, North-South traffic has a red STOP signal.
Regarding the barricades, they are in-place to keep traffic off of the portion of street which has been compromised by a fractured sewer line. When the repair to the sewer line is complete, the street can be repaired and fully re-opened.
Upon inspection of the barricades, they are within specifications.

Construction on Fairlawn had been delayed due to weather and should be in place today. Also, for those of you following this thread, I wanted to provide a link to the Safe Routes to School website. Perhaps the information will help you facilitate conversations with other parents, your school(s), and with us here at the City.

During construction, we will be spot checking traffic and pedestrian crossing to assist in developing solutions for the area. Thank you again for your feedback.

The project to place permanent pavement in the northbound lane that was torn up in December will be coming next month, assuming the weather warms enough to produce the paving materials. Later in the spring , when the pavement temperatures are high enough, we will place new pavement markings at the 25th street crosswalks (only on the Fairlawn legs) and retroreflective material on the signal heads for the Fairlawn approaches to improve visibility of both the signals and the crosswalks for Fairlawn traffic.
I will leave this thread open for comments until after both are installed, so please feel free to give constructive feedback. I hope to have the work done in April, but weather may push it to May.

Long life pavement markings have been installed for the crosswalks and retroreflective sheeting has been applied to the signal heads so that we can enhance visibility of both.
Thank you all for your comments and concerns. As this next school year winds up, please take time to walk or ride the route to school with your kids and see http://www.saferoutesinfo.org/ for more info.
