When taking the ramp to 395-S from S. Glebe road, you have to merge with traffic coming off 395 before you can get on. There is NO merge space and the oncoming cars are coming up a hill and around a corner, making the merge practically blind. Far too often, a car will pull out to merge and then have to slam on their brakes because they can then see an oncoming car--if people behind them have already started to go, an accident is imminent. I was involved in an accident here and the Arlington police that responded said they have tons of accidents here, but that since it's an entrance to an interstate, Arlington can't fix the problem. If Virginia needs to make the fix, they need to know about it. Please help get the word out so a safer solution can be reached!!

You must have started using this merge only recently. It's been this way for 30+ years (I moved here in 1982, grew up on S. Glebe, and know the merge quite well). I'm sure Virginia is well aware of it, and there's nothing they can do. What you should really be more concerned about in that area is the short distance between the end of the ramp used to merge onto 395 NORTH, just after exit 7A (120 South), and the actual start of the exit lane to take exit 7B for 120 North (Glebe Road, in both instances). You have to commit, and do it fast. This is far more dangerous than the 395 South merge, which has a lot more road to work with.

I've lived in Arlington my whole life and now live in Shirlington so this interchange affects my commute from DC daily. I'm not sure I'd say VIRGINIA is aware of it--I'm sure Arlington is and they just say, well, we can't do anything. I just discovered this reporting site and think if we can leave the issue open and get more comments, perhaps it will help take it to the state level.

I agree with Spacehog... this merge has been here forever, and while I'm sure VDOT is aware through their own surveying and all the reports of accidents here over the years, I don't think there's much they can do to fix it (not enough right of way, NIMBY-ism). If it makes you uncomfortable, just take Glebe to Walter Reed and get on 395 south at King St instead.

Few merge's in the area like this. Keep a good speed and get the car in the lane. Don't treat this merge as a STOP SIGN.
FYI- ITs been like this for 30 years b/c this part of arlington aka (southie) has been neglected. Alot of "new faces) in the last 10 years. They will change it.
