That device has been malfunctioning for a couple years. When it boots up when the battery dies in the winter, by default it comes up with metric units, kilometers per hour. You'd be driving by at 25mph and the display could say something like 45 (kph). This confused drivers. I suggested that confusion was a safety hazard as it made the drivers distracted, trying to figure out what was going on. I hoped they would get new software to fix the problem or get a new unit, I didn't think they would remove it.

This problem seems to only happen in the winter as the solar cells don't get enough light and the battery would run down. In the summer it seemed to get enough light, although it's under some heavy leaves? They would start it and set it to mph and as the battery wouldn't run down it wouldn't reboot and it would stay in mph mode.. So maybe they'll put it back up. Or preferably get a new unit or fix the software in the old one.

I'm sorry if this is causing a dangerous speeding problem. Being on a hill makes it harder for drivers as their cars normally speed up. Maybe the neighborhood could pursue 'calming' changes with the city, where they redesign the road and add speed humps (not speed bumps) and other features to slow people down. They can elevate the crosswalk as one of tools. Brooks Street is a good example.
