I moved to Prince Albert from a MUCH smaller location and even it had adequate recycling services. I can't believe we still have to throw out tin cans, glass jars and everything else I've been recycling since I was a child.
I know these services are available through private companies, but the city needs to get with the times and provide this service, if for no better reason than to reduce waste and save the planet.

I too use Crown Shred's plastic recycling program.. amazing how many plastic containers I was throwing out!
I do agree we need a full recycling centre here for ALL recycables.

working directly with the city recycle program I can tell you the main problem is miss-use. There is SO much garbage mixed in with the cardboard and paper bins that it makes them overflow quicky. The other problem is that more and more businesses are using the city recycling program and back up with full moving vans and filling up the recycle stations bins. This is good and bad, good for the recycling purpose, bad because the bins are full making it inconvinent for the residents. The city has to start putting more money into charging the people who missuse the program, and start expanding into (like others said) glass, tin, etc etc.
If you knew how much garbage was thrown into the recycle bins it would make you sick. One bag of garbage in a truckload can contaminate the entire load. Since all of our cardboard and paper has to be sorted manually, the more garbage that is in the load, the more it costs to sort, then transport a second time to the landfill. All of this is VERY time consuming and expensive.

1. you would be amazed at the amount of ppl that mis use their bins and how many loads end up in the landfill through contamination
2. if you cant get ppl to do paper how likely are you to get ppl to seperate 5 other things
3. there are facilities that take these items for free already
4. taxes and rates would go up, they would need more bins, workers, etc and they would have no where to take these cans and recyclables once picked up since there is no company that recycles them in the city, that would mean paying to have them picked up from the city or shipped out of the city to a facility
And just a feneral comment to colleen, the city has flyers for recyling in pa and who takes what, they are available online and at the facilities or can be mailed to you if you call public works, they can also give u the info over the phone, there is recyling info on your garbage schedule, there is advertising on the radio but it is not the cities responsability to pay for advertising for private companies (if you dont know this you would be shocked by what it costs to run a 30 second add on the radio or tv), the welcome wagon does have all these flyers from the city to hand out, so no it isnt that difficult because its being done, problem is people need to want to learn...when is it that ppl start taking responsibility for themselves

It was convenient and cheaper to run than curbside recycling.
I too think this city is rather backwards when it comes to recycling.
I don't age
ree with those who say it won't work because its too expensive, if you build it they will come. If you offer it, people will use it.
get the schoold involved and those smart little brains will educate their parents.
It's simple.
