The other comment I would like to make is that this crescent only has one access road into it. Does it make sense that there be a parking lot off of it?

I understand that the lot is 16 stalls....and having 16 extra cars down your road a day is hardly a dramatic impact. Have you seen the road in FRONT of Derek Taylor during the day....now that is absurd!

I don't disagree that they need more parking there. There are actually 2 schools at Derek Taylor. I disagree with people driving through an area that has one access road and checking to see if there's parking. There are lots of children who walk through our block because it's safer and there's less traffic. The problem is that they were just going to put it in without any permits.

I live in the "loop" and we already have so many vehicles parked on both sides of the road ALL the time. It is so congested already and I feel that the safety of the children who access this loop to get to either school would be compromised.

In June of this year, the public school board applied for development and building permits for the addition of 5 portable classrooms and a parking lot with 16 stalls for staff. As per the City’s process the development permit was circulated to City departments and no concerns were identified. The development permit the school board applied for met the land use bylaw requirements and did not trigger any adjacent property owner notification as identified in the Land use Bylaw. The permit was issued accordingly. The City is not in a position to stop the construction of these portables or parking lot. The City can take concerns and talk to the public school board about how those concerns can be mitigated. As a citizen of the City, you have the right to appear at any Council or Committee meetings as a delegation to discuss any matter you wish. My hope is that the school is seriously reconsidering where it is putting this parking lot and that they will let us residents of the no exit loop know and have input, as per the city council meetings outcome. I was very pleased to see so many residents from our loop at the council meeting voicing our concerns for the safety of all involved! especially our children! Lets not drop the ball on this! I think we have to be diligent and keep an eye on this so that we are not driven over! We have a voice lets us it! For the residents of our loop, I will be starting a petition for speed bumps and signage on the off chance that this so called temporary parking lot goes in, so expect to see me! Question! why would the school pay so much to put a temporary parking lot in, if they will put a permanent one in at a different location later? wasted expense or not really a temporary parking lot?

Speeding on residential streets is a common complaint reported by concerned citizens throughout the City. Speed humps are often requested because they are perceived as a quick and effective solution to speeding. Research has shown; however, that speed humps are not always an effective or safe traffic control device.

The City of Grande Prairie has done its own effectiveness assessment before considering speed humps as a possible solution to residential speeding. The study carefully evaluated the impact of speed humps on traffic speeds and other related elements in neighbourhoods. At the conclusion of the study, it was determined that speed humps are not a desirable speed control method for our City, due to a number of negative factors, specifically Emergency Response Time: The most significant issue is the emergency vehicle response time.

For that reasons, the City of Grande Prairie does not use speed humps on public streets.

What does the city use to slow down traffic in an area where there are a large number of children travelling and the area was initialed designed to keep traffic lower (being that it's a loop with only one access road). Just curious.

The City would then investigate the possibility of doing traffic calming.
Traffic calming is a term most commonly associated with physical features placed on a roadway to influence the speed of vehicles. There are many factors to be considered before traffic calming devices are installed.
