SaintPaulGirl - The city did come and patch a number of potholes on Chittenden drive in 2019 - my guess is they realized the road was dangerous regardless of the legal characterization. Hopefully they'll do the same this year.

SaintPaulGirl, as a homeowner on Chittenden Drive, I can assure you that this issue is far more complicated. The mayor is aware of the issue of private roads and maintenance, as I chatted with him at the last NPA meeting in our neighborhood. The city has refused to "buy" this road since the late 60's when it was built. The reason? They don't want to maintain our roads within the current budget. Meanwhile, we pay as much as everyone else in terms of taxes, yet don't have access to VT Gas or Burlington Telecom or road paving. There's no upside to living on a private road. In addition, bikers and skateboarders are put in harm's way as they speed down our road, unaware of jutting manholes and 6" pot holes. As I look out my window, I see DPW filling a few potholes. Cara--Thanks for the update. I wonder if the city might support the establishment of a special tax district (à la the Church Street Marketplace) as a creative way to slip out of this double bind?
