I have lived on South Washington since 1999 and since then the traffic on the street has gotten much heavier. But the real issue is the speeding. The amount of traffic exceeding the speed limit is staggering. At least 5-10 times a day there are people on motorcycles and in cars with little regard for safety going unbelievably fast. As a resident of the street and part of a family who are avid walkers I am terrified that someone is going to be killed before anything is done. This is a residential street. Please enforce the law of the speed limit on this street. A speed camera is the best solution and if not that, a consistent police presence is a must.
4 telephone poles right across the street have been broken due to traffic accidents in the last 2 years. 2 of them in the last 3 months. It’s only a matter of time before this results in a horrific accident involving pedestrians.

Good Citizen,
Speed bumps are really one of the only permanent solutions in my opinion. But in a town that has let its main street in a historical district fall into utter disrepair, I don't see them diverting finds away from anything to install these speed deterrents. I would also add that other that questionable funding practices at the town manager level, there may be a more practical reason to avoid speed bumps, street ploughing being the first that comes to mind.
With an awareness of the town's reluctance to actually spend money on or, god forbid - think of creative solutions to the problem, I have actually sent a few ideas to the town manager himself.
One of the ideas was a brilliant suggestion form a neighbor:
On any given day there are half a dozen Police cruisers sitting in the parking lot of the Police Station. Take two or 3 of these cars and park them on the street. Nothing gets your foot to the brake pedal faster the the sight of a police car. FREE. THIS COSTS NO MONEY and would be effective to a degree. Certainly more effective than the current approach.
Another idea was to install a sign that says the street is being monitored by police speed cameras.
I even designed it for them! other than making 4 or 5 signs and having them mounted on the telephone poles, this is another budget conscious idea.
The primary issue here is that someone really has to care. You can bet your life that if the Town Manager or Police Chief lived on this street the problem would have been resolved. And maybe, just maybe the two people that have been killed in the past 5 months on this street due to reckless speeds could have been avoided.
