Every time that I try to turn left onto Arnold (going around the circle) I nearly get hit since nobody yields to people in the circle. Should I take the right-of-way or risk getting hit? Roundabouts work well in complicated intersections. This used to be a T intersection with no problems. The roundabout now makes it risky to navigate. Even though I live close by, I avoid it.

I'm not surprised that people are having trouble with the roundabout since no one seems to even understand the basic rules of a 4-way stop.

I agree with LL people in general do not know how to navigate a 4 way stop. Or even Yield signs. That is one of the problems that I have had with drivers since we moved to the area 8 years ago. People do not know how to drive in this area.

Well to be technical, this is not a roundabout, but a traffic circle. Roundabouts are designed to keep traffic moving, whereas traffic circles like this one are designed to slow traffic down. I guess it's supposed to make it safer for pedestrians to cross, and it is easier to turn left onto Bellows from East Campus with traffic coming from Mission not approaching as fast. But going through it, you have to correct your wheel, and it's got to be a nightmare for trucks, buses, and the like. All in all, stupid idea, along with that back-in angle parking they installed on Bellows.

This is actually and obstruction in the middle of the street, not a rounabout. Also the bike lanes mysterioulsy end right there making it unsafe for them. The associated back in angle parking is just another odd element to the development on Bellows. I believe this is part of a trendy "bike friendly community" movement the City is participating in to show how progressive it is. Perhaps it has helped traffic flow in the sense that people may avoid it, I know I do.

try driving a bus around it or should i say over it and the one down town says yield but it seems everyone just drives faster to try to beat you around it yee haw what a city

This traffic circle is (was) a waste of tax papers money. Who decided to put this traffic circle at this location ?

It's dangerous if you are driving east and want to make a left hand turn onto Arnold because most people don't realize they are supposed to yield. They assume that if somebody wants to make the left hand turn he/she will use a turn signal. The circle is so small that it feels unnatural to treat it like a roundabout rather than an obstruction in the road.

Its really not even a real round about. It doesn't fit the min size requirements based on government guidelines for a round about. It can be considered traffic calming but honestly lets look at the whole Bellows debacle. First this circle makes it impossible for the school buses to "follow the rule" because they are too big and YES plenty of school buses leaving Fancher daily go through there. I go through that location at least 4 times a day and I can count on one hand the number of drivers who actually treat it as intended. The bump on the north side is actually nicely worn down now that you hardly have to slow down. This garbage that it makes it safer for the back in parking (another topic I won't even get started on) and bikes is based on a very thin premise. Sit there for a day and watch. It accomplishes NOTHING!

Since I work on campus and go through the roundabout intersection of E Bellows near Fancher at least twice a day if not more, I find it very frustrating that at peak times (especially at 5:00 pm) you have to remain in the right lane before you are able to move to the left lane to make a left on Mission. The traffic is backed up all the way to Parking Lot 8 at Franklin Street and even though you don't need to be in the right lane you are forced to be in the right lane as you can't get by the roundabout to get in the left lane. Most of the cars in the right lane turn onto Mission, but even if you didn't want to turn on Mission and you wanted to go straight across, you are forced to wait in the right lane. It is very frustrating!

This is more of a speed bump than around-about. I feel sorry for Fire, EMS, Bus and Snow Plow drivers. They need a "NO TRUCKS" sign to warn about this mess! The whole re-surfacing in that area is a joke! Almost as bad a bike lanes on Mission!
Take it out and go back to stop signs and free-flow Bellows!

Time to admit this was a bad plan and get rid of it. Several time I have nearly hit people on bikes (can't be the only one) as the bike lan abruptly disappears at the intersection. It's awkward and unsafe.

Oh, and by the way, the intersection this dinky little excuse for a round-about happens to be at is Bellows Street, with lots of CMU traffic, and Arnold Street, which only goes north for all of 1 block - one of those major hubs in Mount Pleasant where danger was a major concern? HARDLY!!

We went and elected two of the "appointed" commissars to their lofty positions but with all the brew-ha-ha, nothing is done - GO FIGURE!! Fire trucks of the size needed for dorm and apartment fires cannot get though there in a proficient manner, yet these politicians will go "who'd a guessed" when deaths occur because of this and try to absolve themselves of any responsibility. (Right Kathy?) and then we move on to the "back in parking" spots...OVER A BIKE LANE???? How stupid do you have to be to understand a vehicle is largely blind when backing up and to force vehicles to 'back up' over the lane where kids are riding their bikes?? IT IS TOTALLY IRRESPONSIBLE for our "elected" politicians to persist in creating such lunacy with our tax monies and then to do nothing to correct it?? GET 'EM OUT OF THERE!!! Also let's take out their "pet" MDOT officials who approved such stupidity as well as all the other "Hot" spots in town, like the lane paint on Mission, since they obviously don't care either. A drive down Bellows from Mission sure does exemplify what kind of an education you can expect to receive from CMU, doesn't it?? ...and they say what about first impressions...???

It was a terrible plan that costs us residents alot of money. Screw Mr. Walkability. Remove that terribly engineered speed bump and put the road back.

53 people so far have complained about this. That is alot considering the percentage that would even locate this site. I hope they fix it soon.

You know I am guilty and see others just driving over it as if its not there. South side is already worn down nicely that its not a big deal to drive over it. North side still needs some work. In a way I consider it my right to civil disobedience.

As we all can see, this eyesore that only serves as an obstacle to the flow of traffic in this area will never be correct as our corrupt officials will never admit any wrong doing and will only gloss over and problems that this serves. When queried, all will disavow any knowledge of this boondoggle of a project let alone admit to having a hand in the decision in allowing it to be created. All will simply act as if they have never had any knowledge of it being any problem to anybody. Our City officials are currently too busy try to appease our local malcontents with discussing anti-discrimination policies rather than accepting those already in force and simply enforcing them. Sort of like trying to re-invent the wheel and then acting surprised if anybody tells them it's already been done. When confronted with this issue, they will once again act surprised to find that it is a problem. It's called being unaware of what the needs of our community truly are and listening to their constituents.

I ignore it too, but I don't want to ruin my rims by running over it. I am guilty of turning left off Arnold and not taking the long way around the barn. I bounced off the curb on the south side of the street once in my snowy attempt at rounding it, and stuck in a snowbank. Now I just turn left and do not use the circle thing. The replacement signage has got to be expensive it has been run over and knocked out several times, did you see the spot where it had a dead body sketch in the street in front of it? I know a man was reported hit on kinney street that same night, I always have wondered if the paper reported the wrong road and it was bellows but they didn't want to admit the circle was a disaster.

Whose idea was this? I have to believe that whoever came up with this must be so insecure that they can't vote for removal. Anyone with an ounce of brains can see that it is totally ineffective. This is another prime example of persons we vote in and then the persons they hire, not listening to the people they work for. I am sure if it had been put to the public for input and comment and if those people "in charge" would have listened, this expense and obstacle would have been avoided.
How do we get city hall to PLEASE REMOVE THIS WASTE?
