They did not get Camaros they have Chargers.......... The reason is they are better on gas then Crown Vics they rate the same with teh Ford at 16/24 and the Dodge at 16/25 but the dodge only uses 4 cylinders and kicks in all 8 only when needed this increases gas mileage alot. The Ford runs on all 8 cylinders all the time using more gas.

So the College saves money in the long run, you will see alot of Depts going to teh Dodge in the future

There are a limited amount of cars that offer a police package, which include Chargers, Chevy Impalas, and Ford Crown Victorias. Many police departments, including Cleveland are replacing their old vehicles with Chargers. They get better mileage, are more modern, and are close to the same price as Crown Vics, which is what many departments have used for years.

Shouldn't this be verified before it is put on here to incite the public? Lakeland has 1 Charger, not "new Camaros." The Charger is more cost effective than the Crown Vic. The writer of the post should find out the facts before she hurriedly becomes "offended." Don't be ignorant.

You should be more concerned about the Hood Rats that sign up at Lakeland and the Govt gives them $3500 just for signing up. they goto 2 classes then they take the money and run.

All the newer police cars are "muscle cars" now. The most popular replacement model for police cruisers is the Dodge Charger. It's not just Lakeland, but other local cities who are buying the same type of cars. Police Departments are limited on the number of different types of cars available as police cruisers.

I believe this is a valid issue. I agree that tax dollars & tuition should not be used for Camaros for a local college 'police' force

They just patrolling Lakeland,right ,?so why not electric cars, or something with a 4 cyl.

Camaro's, really? They replaced their 10 year old car with a new one two years ago. The replacement was a standard police car, not a muscle car. You are used to seeing the Ford "muscle" cars, so this one looks different. You should get all of the facts before jumping to conclusions.

I'm sorry Mike, Charger or Camaro, they are both muscle cars. Ford doesn't make Crown Vics any longer. I called my brother-in-law, who is a manager at the Ford Plant in Avon and he told me, Police dept.'s who use Fords, use either the Taurus or Interceptor, which is built on the Taurus platform. In Lakeland's case, I believe it to be more cost effective, all things considered, to have purchased a Taurus, not a Charger. All they do is cruise around at 25mph and write tickets. Last year, they had all of 8 incidents that needed more 'vigorous' intervention--which consisted of they increasing speed to 35mph, stopping, getting out of their cars, and talking to complainants and such. With a track record such as that, a Ford Fiesta would have sufficed. I'm sorry, but to me, that's just not enough activity to justify the cost. IMHO.

The Charger was purchased in 2009. It would have been impossible for them to have purchased a Taurus police car since they weren't available until March 2010. So their only other options were an Impala or an outdated Crown Victoria. If you don't know the facts, please don't act like you do.

There was plenty wrong with their old crown vics... things were rust buckets. Considering these cars are also used for training purposes for students in the police program, I'd consider this just as important as having up to date text books. Students enrolled in the program aren't going to be driving 10-15 year old police vehicles.

These cars are NOT Camaros. They are chargers. They have been outfitted and tailored to police vehicle operations, just as other ones have been. Pay more attention. Dodge Chargers have had police packages for several years now. It's not like they are driving SRT-8's with the luxury package, moon roofs, and rims.

Training students to be police offers in Ford Fiestas isn't beneficial to anyone.

Not to mention, the v8 included with these chargers is far more responsive and fuel efficient than the gas guzzling ford used in their old @#$% There have been several cases where pursuits have occurred. I've seen a few times a Lakeland PV pulling someone over on 90, along with Mentor or Kirtland. They issue tickets that put points on your record. They aren't just a college security force, they are an endorsed, official operation.

Time to get a grip, this is truly a non-issue.

Lakeland doesn't use 15 year old computers to train students taking computer classes. So why should they use 15 year old vehicles for their law enforcement training?

You need to take into account that police vehicles are purchased through a state bidding process. They also take into account long term maintenance, wear and tear, and how long the car is going to last them. It may seem like a muscle car, but you also need to look at other police cars that are being used out there. The Dodge Charger looks like a muscle car, but actually it is a great vehicle for law enforcement to use. I understand what it may look like, but there are many underlying factors when police cars are being purchased. I am sure if you ask the school about this they can give you the information. Hopefully this helps a little bit.

Lakeland police are not rent a cops, they are trained just like any other police force, in fact Lakeland holds credited training for police all over the state. If ever cited by Lakeland police and have to appear before a judge, a real education is in store.

I agree, it's a travesty! They didn't just get one car, they got something like five! I bet the cars they traded in didn't have more than 50,000 miles on them. I can't see how they could have. They were two years newer and the same model as my car. I travel from Parry every day and I've got 70000 miles on mine. Ridiculous!

It's amazing how little people know, and are spouting typical rhetoric, complaining about tax dollars wasted. The levy that was passed goes toward building a new jobs/community center as well as operational costs.

Since the campus isn't large, I would expect the mileage to be low, but mileage isn't the only thing that destroys cars. Constant stop and go driving, long periods of idling, and age also do. There is a point when it doesn't make sense to keep dumping money into car repairs.

This is a travesty! I am not in aggreement with them using police force vehicles for class purposes!

It makes sense to use the same vehicles for patrol that they use for training students. Otherwise the vehicles used for training would sit unused 99% of the time. Would you rather they have purchased additional vehicles for training only?
