Just because they're vacant doesn't make it an eyesore. Not for me, anyway. The vacancies are a sign of the times. Retail isn't what it used to be and it can't all be blamed on the economy. They're taking bids on the retail leases over in the Marc's plaza. Many stores are going online or closing because of big box stores or online giants like Amazon. The recent bankruptcy of Borders is a good example.

If the brain wizards on city council would have approved the Sheetz going in there, it would have been drastically improved. We didn't need a viable business in there, I guess they would rather look at a rat infested piece of crap building.

A business wanted to open there, but a bunch of people put up a stink about it. You can't have it both ways.

Hey Javamom....that plaza hasn't had full occupancy for many, many years even before the economy tanked. There are better looking updated plazas for business to move into. How are they going to attract any business now when it is totally empty? Tear it down and clean up that corner.

they tried to get Business in there but people complained about new business .Now they have rat infested rundown building there !!! Much better than brand new SHEETZ.....Oh wait it isnt . If you want to make it a greenspace, then are you willing for tax dollars to be used to purchase the property? I am sure those in southern Mentor would not be so willing.

As a business owner, I can tell you that I feel for the gas station that was opposing the development of a Sheetz. He's spent his life establishing a business there and then some trendy place comes in and sweeps up a portion of his sales (some of it was already taken by Get Go) and by the time you cut the pie into so many small pieces, someone has to close! If the property owner can't rent the units there, they'll decide what they are going to do with that property. A green space, perhaps...or maybe another dollar store will pop up because of this economy. Heck maybe I'll even move my store over there since it would be closer to home and Mentor Avenue isn't what its all cracked up to be!

I am amazed how people say "just make it a green space" without blinking an eye. If they want a green space then let them do the work and pay the money. I'm sure the owners would like to do something with the buildings, like make a profit on their investment instead of paying for taxes and other upkeep item.

Perhaps the person or company who owns the land can make it green space....If it`s Bill gates ,or someone with that kind of cash,,,then it`s feasable,,,if not, then get something in there.

Way, way too much unoccupied retail space in M-O-L, such as in the Marc's plaza. Lots of trees/habitat died for that one. It would be great to take some of these places back. Why in the world did the city think the retail was needed or would be profitable?!!

How about a Jimmy John's or Qdoba? Something trendy but not as noisey as say a Sheetz. Then make the rest a small park or something.

We moved out of Mentor on the Lake 3 years ago and these building were this way then. We had heard about a Sheetz going to be built there, but it still sits empty. We were back in town during Christmas and everything is still the same. Do something with these buildings

I love how a legitamate buisness like sheetz wants to open in a run down center and the city wont let them. So there is another gas station? so what Giant eagle has gas too they let them open up. it is not Better in Mentor

please contact Mentor councilmen Micchia and Bucey and ask them why they voted against removing this eyesore and allowing Sheetz to build there? They are the ones you should be addressing your question to!!!!

Bucey & Micchia voted no strictly based on their political allies Walsh's objection to the project. The neighbors immediately behind the Sheetz proposal supported it. Cals Marathon makes his living on repairs. If fuel sales was an issue he would have been put out of business long ago by the Get Go right around the corner. Now that Mentor council has added Janet Dowling we have someone with common sense and a mind of her own perhaps something will happen with this eyesore.

I wonder if the people /person who is in charge of this click fix site,,can pass this on to the authorities we elected ,to get an answer to these fine retail establishments (the ones not there anymore), in this part of the city.

Laketran station would be good if it could be shown that Laketran is used in that area....given the economy, something that brings some jobs and tax revenue would be more welcome

The traffic there is insane already - a Laketran would be make driving on Munson / Lakeshore a nightmare!

Any commercial enterprise would bring more traffic....(unless it was for people who lived behind it ,and could only get there by walking, or osmosis.)

While a nice Public Park would be nice.... it really isn't large enough and it isn't Mentors property - it is private property!
The owner might sell it all to Mentor but I doubt the owner would make it a park!

@Joshua....the neighbors were in agreement WITH Sheetz, all concerns had been addressed by Sheetz....it was 3 members of Mentor City Council that voted against it.....Bucey, Micchia and Walsh...they are the council members that you need to speak with about why they stopped Sheetz from building there....

The two neighbors directly affected by the SHEETZ station that lived right behind it both supported the project the night it was voted on. Regardless of what some people may want to replace this outdated vacant eyesore we have it now appears SHEETZ is willing to put up the money (again) to put a new building that will bring construction jobs as well as permanent employment for some people.
