Transportation has replied: "Speed reduction ahead signs are only recommended when the reduction in speed is more than 20kph or when the sightlines are compromised, possibly because of a hill or a curve in the road. There are no sightline issues on the eastbound approach into the City and the change in speed does not exceed 20kph. Furthermore, the signs used to inform drivers of the change in speed limit are the same size as those used on the provincial road network (600mm x 750mm) and can be read and comprehended from a distance exceeding 150m from the sign. Motorists that are driving with due care and attention have ample time reduce their speed, by 20kph, before they reach the speed limit signs.
Speed reduction ahead signs were previously installed on 100 Ave, near the airport, because the drop in speed was 40kph, from 110kph to 70kph. With the recent changes in speed limits, together with the clear sight lines, there is no longer a need to install speed reduction warning signs.". Thank you for using SeeClickFix.

Thank you for your response. It's rather interesting that when approaching the City of Edmonton from the west and the speed is reduced from 110 to 100, there is a speed reduction ahead sign. I would think it merely common sense that drivers are warned that they are approaching a speed zone, regardless of the visibility of the signs from a distance. It would certainly assist drivers to be more cautious as they approach the zone. It's called courtesy.
