Thank you for looking into this issue. This has been an ongoing problem for many years. The initial action may be to provide stop signs with stop bars on the north south streets midway between 8th and 12th. My preference would be speed humps or other traffic calming measures since many drivers do not stop at the current stop signs.

I also live on 10th Terrace and can confirm that cars have been speeding down this street way too fast. These blocks do not generally see a lot of traffic, so children play and people walk their dogs here. Then a car will suddenly drive through at 40+ mph and it is very dangerous. We would very much appreciate anything the city can do to help mitigate the problem.

We live on 12th Ave and have asked the same thing. Speed humps are prohibited.......so nothing is done and people still speed.

I can confirm that speed bumps/humps to slow traffic are no longer utilized in Gainesville. That practice was eliminated by the City Commission several years ago (and has been defunded) due to the impact these devices were having on emergency vehicles and emergency response times. The last policy discussion in 2014 re-affirmed that decision to keep a moratorium on speed humps.

Speeders always cause great concern, but traffic engineers are very limited in what actions can be taken. Generally speaking, traffic studies show that speeders make up less than 15% of vehicular traffic on any given road and usually a lot less than that. The use of signals, beacons and even signs is regulated by federal and state authorities, based on collected data and analytics.

The best way to control speeding is to ticket drivers. GPD is very short handed currently and doing their best to cover all areas of the city. Perhaps when more officers are hired, increased enforcement patrols will occur.

Shawn Webber also suggested stop signs with stop bars in his comment. Is there any reason we couldn't get a couple more stop signs (or even yield signs) in this neighborhood?
