I just moved into this location in December and have noticed that further down the road there are stop signs on my street to slow down traffic at intersections. By our house (the intersections of Nicholson/Jamestown and Nicholson/Union), there is not a stop sign to slow down traffic. There is a curve in the road and with no sidewalks and the new spring weather, there are tons of kids outside playing and riding bikes. The speed on the road is so high and stop signs would be a way to get traffic to slow down. I will be working on petitions for stop signs on Nicholson, but wanted to address this concern as there are bus stops and kids outside playing constantly. A speed trap/cop car is welcome to park in my driveway to catch some of them as well.

Thank you for reaching out to the City with your concerns regarding the vehicle speeds along Nicholson Drive. In 2014, the City conducted a safety study of Nicholson Drive to evaluate the street geometry and speeds. The study concluded that no safety improvements, signage or striping was warranted based upon observed traffic conditions. A copy of the study is available upon request. The City has continued to monitor speeds along Nicholson Drive over the years and identified that the speeds have remained about the same since the 2014 study. The last speed data collection was in February, 2019.
As it has been two years since the City collected traffic information along Nicholson Drive, I have asked staff to reset our traffic counting units back on Nicholson Drive in the coming weeks. The speed data will be shared with our Police Staff to identify if/when enforcement is needed. The traffic counting units, or JAMAR units, are inconspicuous black boxes that use radar to collect vehicle size, volumes and speed data. Since they are not obvious to drivers, they do a good job of collecting accurate speed data. Once the traffic counts are collected and provided to our police department, I will be happy to share this information with you.
