DESCRIPTION
Here is the recent correspondence with the Ward 46 Alderman's office on this issueMaggie,
If you are referring to the downspout on the left it is connected to the sewer and does not spill out onto the alley surface so your rain barrel suggestion would not be feasible
Please expedite CDOT review and action. As the picture reveals, occupants of 917 W Dakin are depositing their garbage in the alley rather than wade through the water to get to the dumpsters. This creates an invitation to rat problems.
Thanks for your continued attention to a quick solution to this problem.

The 311 request is a 'Water on Street Complaint' which prompts a response from a crew from Water Management.
The Department of Streets and Sanitation does not handle the repavement of alleyways or streets, that is the Department of Transportation. We can investigate alternative solutions in the interim before the assessment for the green alley takes place; however, please keep in mind that while those adjustments sound like solutions, without a proper assessment by a CDOT engineer, it can do more damage than good to add pavement.
In the picture I see that there is a downspout that lets out right where water seems to be congregating the most. I would suggest in times when rainfall is near, to put a rain barrel in that alcove so it can alleviate some of the water flow from pooling into the center and causing flooding. Even with the barrel there, it should allow for egress/ingress for vehicular traffic in the alley if that is still a concern that you have.
Best,

Hello Maggie,
As promised we are reporting back on alley key cut. As is evident in the attached picture following the last 24 hours of rain, the key cut has not resolved the flooding problem in the alley between our building at 920 W Sheridan and 917 W Dakin.. As we expected, since the flooding is in the low point of the alley, the water still collects in spite of the key way.
What are the next steps since the CDOT key cut does not make any difference?
Another Owner in our building has also been corresponding with William Patterson in your Office. Please bring him into the loop on this so we are all communicating. He indicates a 311 request has been sent from your office to help address the issue. The Service Request number is SR21-01783038.
Would it be possible for the Streets and San Department to add a layer of pavement on the low area so water would not collect as an interim solution until the Green Alley can be installed?
Thanks for your continued attention to resolution of this flooding problem, we look forward to your response.

Water in Basement Complaint Archived920 W Sheridan Rd Chicago, IL, 60613, USA - Chicago Ward 44Constant flooding in this low spot in the alley between 920 W Sheridan and 917 W Dakin results in water entering both buildings. A keyway was recently cut down the alley which had no effect as this is a low point in the alley. It needs another layer of pavement to eliminate the depressed area where surface water collects during each rain. There are no downspouts contributing to the problem-it is all from surface water.
