Garbage cans in the street blocking the last parking space on the block. Why do they make it so hard when we have to do it right for Waste Management.

Waste Management just came through today and left 90% of the green waste bins (the other bins were neatly returned to the curb) in the street, blocking cars, driveways and parking spaces. It's hard enough around here to get through traffic and park without the assistance of the garbage collectors.

Pile of items on a big blue plastic pallet, blocking half the sidewalk for over a week. The street is a very busy pedestrian way, just one block off of College Ave. The residents of 340 put it out there and have left it with a note "free" on the stack. It's long past time for the residents to pick up their unwanted stuff.

The residents at 5417 Boyd put out some items for "free" a few weeks ago. A black filing cabinet is STILL out on the sidewalk - obviously no one wants it, but the owners won't dispose of it properly.

My neighbors put out a pile of junk on the street corner, in front of their house, weeks ago. A big white sofa is still there. It looks like it could be there a long time unless someone intervenes.

How come no one ever comes through to enforce the 2-hour neighborhood parking rules? We pay for the stickers, but 7 weeks have gone by (yes, I work at home; I pay attention) and not a single city parking person.

Not only do the residents notice how difficult it is to park, but non-residents know that, since parking is NOT enforced, they can park here, day after day, all day long, with impunity. The cars parked here do not belong to people who are shopping on College Ave. The owners are long-term parkers, entirely defeating the purpose of the PAID stickers.

There are many children on this block, most of whom try and play in the street. But with so many cars now parked on the block, the kids are having a much harder time.

Finally, since Rockridge is such "transit-rich" neighborhood, it would seem to be a very good idea to get many of these long-term parkers out of their cars and onto transit. Or maybe with those new bike racks nearby (great!) they could get on a bike. I do.

I called the parking enforcement dept. at 10:30 am today because the entire block was overwhelmed by non-stickered cars. As is true most days. The most courteous and helpful person on the phone said that she would send someone out. She did. They came, at 1:30 pm. BUT they never came BACK! So, by 5 pm, at least six non-resident cars were still there, and had been there all day. At a minimum, that's 4 hours and no consequences: Oakland made no money; and my block will still be full of all-day parkers tomorrow because, today, nothing happened.

So what does it take? I have to pay my $35 each year for a resident permit sticker, but even when you call, there is absolutely NO enforcement.
