Wondering what all these reassignment notices mean. Is there someone I should be contacting specifically to ensure that the high population of kids walking on Cambridge is being considered for traffic flow of this new garage?

Ive been asking for a crossing guard on Cambridge and Bowers for more than 5 years. I was always told “we are working on hiring new ppl” and every year it remained without a crossing guard. Every other corner has a crossing guard so why not that one? I can’t recall the amount of times I would attempt to cross that street with my little ones and cars come racing up from Webster to try to catch the green light on Central. They honestly won’t do anything until someone gets hurt unfortunately. They won’t even consider a speed bump at least.

If someone wants to see exactly why I’m concerned, come to Cambridge or Hancock right around PS 28 between 815 and 845 every morning. There are kids walking in the streets, there are cars everywhere. It’s already a pretty chaotic environment and I am very concerned that adding in the parking garage entrance on to Cambridge is going to make it much worse and much more dangerous. Come also between 230 and 3 PM to see what dismissal looks like.

This is petty old and mentions that a garage will be built. This should have gone through a traffic engineering review. Was there an update to the area?

Back on 8/31/2021, an employee posted an update, but accidentally posted it as an internal comment instead of a public comment. Here is what she said:

"I have done a work order for four pedx crossing signs. I hope these sign will help the situation with the kids crossing"

Were these signs put in?

Great! I am lad to know the signs were installed.

When new buildings are created, like this garage (already built?), Planning usually requires a traffic study if they believe there will be an impact on the current traffic pattern. They don't always reach out to Traffic Engineering on these projects.

Either way, the traffic engineers look at everything as they exist now, including transportation (buses, school buses, Via cars, etc.)

To clarify - I was NOT confirming the signs were installed. I’m not sure.

The garage is also not yet built and is in planning stages. If this department is not the correct department to ask about that - can you tell me what is?

OH! Ok, I will make sure the signs were installed and if not, that they get installed.

For the garage, you would need to contact City Planning and ask if a traffic study was required with the plan approval. The phone number is 201-547-5010.

Just to note - I just called that number. Navigated through the phone tree. Got to the ‘for all other questions press 5’ and then it routed me to a space that said there is ‘no mailbox available’ and then there was nothing I could do but hang up . Jersey city is a very difficult place to try and be involved/care about things. It’s frustrating.

UGH, we need to change this. I sent you an email directly. A lot of divisions have changed to email as a better way to take requests/questions. Let me see if this is the case with City Planning.

Our inspector, Billy just checked out the site and found that the signs had been installed. This is great. Just one step of many, but this is good.

I will continue to work on the rest.

I am pulling these two requests together because they are related for making the area safer.

A traffic study and an additional stop sign have been requested for this intersection of Cambridge and Bowers so many times. So many accidents and near misses with drivers racing up Bowers to catch the light at Central.

I completely get it. SCF is a great tool, if there is someone actively working with it. Our engineers are doing their very best and have no time to figure out the 808 remaining requests. It's chaos! And it must stop. So i am working very hard to pull everything together; figure out what has been finished or not and if it was finished, did it resolve the issue; and put reports together for every request that includes observations, suggestions, and requests so everyone is heard.

It sucks that it took this long and I am sorry about that, but now we have a new director and the engineers will have the tools to be able to tackle the issues in a clear, systematic, and educated way.

Now the traffic engineers are looking at solutions, but if they want more input, what neighborhood association covers your area?
