Description
Sidewalk has been damaged for over 22 years. I was told 15 years ago by Laurie janel that I was on a “list” to get it repaired but that turned out to be a lie. I contacted the engineer dept 4 hrs ago and received a letter saying I’d be on another list to get it fixed but haven’t heard a peep since! It’s an eyesore and a big problem for people walking around the neighborhood, that have disabilities are forced to walk into the street not to mention my car and family driving over it over and over again. I’d like to have this fixed. Someone please contact me!!

The Town of Hamden inspects and repairs sidewalks when there are structural problems with the sidewalks. When a complaint is received, the Engineering Department sends an inspector to look at the sidewalks, evaluate the issue, and register the site on our repair list. If the damage is very severe, we will spot repair the walks sooner than the repair protocol. The wait time is months to years depending on our waiting list and the severity of the problems.
The Engineering Department originally inspected the site on 9/27/2017. We have determined that the sidewalk(about 50lf), walkup (about 5 ft towards the house, necessary to repair the main sidewalk), and driveway apron (about 15ft wide) do need to be repaired. The site has been added to our master list for repairs.
The Town currently repairs sidewalks based on the roads with claims then we address the oldest complaints. Once we get to the group with the oldest complaints, we attempt to repair all sidewalk problems on the street. We are currently working on streets with complaints from 2008. Based on current funding and given your street is a 2017 street, we do not have a good estimate on when the repair will be conducted.
In 2016, the Town changed from only doing the oldest complaints on a road to repairing all of the damaged sidewalks along the entire road or block portions of the sidewalks if the road is very long. We chose the roads to repair by starting with the roads with the oldest complaints. By repairing entire lengths of damaged sidewalk, the Town is able to obtain better prices and better responses from our sidewalk contractors. We are also able to limit the necessary construction disruption.
We do not have a good time frame for repairs. We await a capital budget to be passed by the Legislative Council. Due to the lack of funding no construction work is being done, other than external work by others, such as SCG repaving which does not cost the Town
We are starting the budget process to try to obtain more funds for more than claims list repairs. Once funding is obtained, we will continue to issue repairs on the approximately $400,000 worth of claims work before we resume the normal sidewalk repair program.
We understand this is a very long process and apologize for the delay.
We are attempting to repair sidewalks as fast as funding allows. It is a very daunting problem. Since there are so many repairs necessary, the Town revised the repair program as below to address damaged sidewalks. We anticipate about $20 million worth of damages to be repaired. The replacement program is a long term program which is anticipated to take over twenty years to accomplish due to current funding levels.
Thank you for caring enough to ask.
